hey i just started reading this thread just now and i noticed some areas that you could be corrected. im not trying to be a jerk, its just to help out some other people. Now i've been cooking about 3-5 batches of edibles a week for about 3 months, and i have cooked with very expensive bud ($300 per ounce) and very cheap bud ($30 per ounce). i didn't like the smoking once i started caughing up black stuff and its much harder to get caught with brownies in your fridge rather than 1 ounce or more of bud.
the first thing is that THC is an oil. same as butter. which means they stick together. when you filter it through a cheesecloth use alot. you will end up only getting butter + thc + a little bit of fluids from the bud itself. all the other junk stays in there and you can only tell the taste of a bud very slightly in butter, not even worth it in my opinion. you can use 2 or 3 ounces of cheap ($30) weed rather than one expensive ounce and they will taste better, they will be much more potent and will cost less. but i still grind up the bud in a grinder because it gives more surface area and is easier to extract the thc.
Your cooking and heating methods are awesome. crock pots are the best things to use by far. but the only thing that i would change is instead of keeping the crock pot on for 4-5 hours keep it on for 24! just make sure to keep the cover on and make sure that it does not boil... or come close... or start to burn. lol. yea i know 24 hours is a long time but usually u can hook it up in your bathroom and close the door and it will stink just as bad as if someone smoked in there.
And one last thing that i would correct you on is the amount of hash/keif to bud ratio. the strongest thc content i have heard of in weed is about 30% (i believe the average is around 15% or so). so even if you were to extract 100% of the thc in the bud (which is practically impossible) 3 grams of the most potent bud will only equal 1 gram of hash or keif because that is 100% THC (3:1 ratio). it might not taste like marijuana as much but it will definetly be just as potent. oh and the last thing i would say is it really doesn't matter how you cool your butter, you've already trapped the thc in the butter so it isn't going anywhere i usually just keep it out in the open and let it cool or place it in my fridge till its cool.
i know i haven't been on this forum for long but i have been making cannabutter for a while now. Just try it and you'll see.
