Is there anything an indoor grower can do to prep the soil so that this doesn't become a familiar incident?

hey sproketman,
elimination is hard to achieve, but yes you should be able to control them and ill be getting the bombs today. no, i doubt they were in the soil due to using Ocean forest indoor growing soils. also they probably would have shown much earlier. the room is "near" sealed but any thing that small is will find its way in. growing plants attract insects, such is life. ive seen in researching this there are pyrethrin powders...so maybe mixing in or dusting the top of the pots with it as it appears thats where they breed. (see stinky learn something new every day

) pyrethrin seems to control many different bugs too so i wouldnt see where it would hurt.
