Try slicing the net up a little next time. The roots DO grow through it; however, the net will slow them down. I've tested this and there is a picture somewhere on these boards of my side-by-side rootball comparison. Good luck finding it... you got 15k posts to sift through... good luck!
You should be fine with your nutes if you go about it carefully; start a little weak and work up. Palm tree no problem. There is a school of pruning that aims for a bare trunk and dense canopy. Google 'pistilwipt pruning' or 'pistilwhipt pruning'.
