I want to make a kief tumbler
I imagine converting a rock tumbler. Or perhaps getting a small electric motor and pully and see if I can make one from scratch. I have access to a CNC and all woodworking equipment.
Has anyone heard of a tumbler to separate kief? Has anyone made one, or better yet have plans?
What mesh screen is best for separating kief? I understand that silk screen material is best, but there are many different mesh sizes.
I searched for this but there is very little info, at least on tumblers.

Good lord, has no on heard of a kief tumbler?
OK, how about just some kief screens of different mesh. Anyone?
Kief is commonly known of, or so I thought, and it is the most precious part of the weed plant - the resin that actually delivers the medicine. It would be much better for your lungs if you didn't smoke all that excess vegatative matter. Now please tell me how you guys filter it out.

Just me:
That looks like what I have been thinking of. Thanks. I'll bet I could build one for a lot less than $518 though. At least now I know what mesh screen to try (150 micron). I have a rotisserie motor. I think I'll come up with some plans of my own. Maybe I'll share if you guys are interested.

I have less than $20 in mine and it works great..
I got my screen on ebay.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1
for a motor I used the oscillating motor out of a fan(not the motor that turns the blade but the motor that makes the fan turn back and forth) the output is about 4 or 5 RPM.
these things are easy to build and there is no reason to pay a lot of money for one...

Bender, I would love it if you could post a couple pictures of your tumbler. Please with sugar on top? If not perhaps you could describe what you did to make it.
I like $20 better than $518.

I know. That is one great perk of my job. I want to look for other work, but I don't want to give up my CNC.

Opie,
I know this post is over a month old, but I couldn't help but reply. I too would LOVE to build a tumbler. And even started accumlting parts for one. Someone over at O.G. had plans for one using a rotissary motor and some round plywood blanks. Add to that some threaded rod, metal tub to fit over the rod and some misc wood, nuts and bolts to assemble the thing. The only part I was never able to figure out was on the non motorized side the author mentioned some sort of bering assembly. There was no pics or part numbers mention, so I've yet to put the thing together.
Perhaps together we could figure something out? Lemme know if yer interested, 'k?

I am interested, but very short on time right now. I actually brought in my rotissere motor last week in preparation, but havn't done anything else.
The parts you mention above are similar to what I have in mind. Lets keep sharing what we do or find out, on this post.

I wish I was busy! I was laid off end of April. Gas prices being what they are, I do all my job hunting online. Meanwhile my local employment/training office is draggin thier feet getting me into a training program... I had asked about getting certfied in welding and machine shop. Beats the 20 years of retail management I've been doing!
From what I recall, the plans called for either 5/8" or 7/8" threaded rod. He then filed one end until it was square and fit inside the slot for the motor. He then spun a washer and nut down on it. After drilling holes in the center of the wooden blanks, pushed the threaded rod through. He then cut a length of steel metel tube to slip over the threaded rod. I think he mentioned about 6" in length. This will be the width of the tumbler. We could make it any width any size we wanted actually. On the other side of the "sandwich" another washer, blank, washer and second nut. This was all braced using scrap 1/2x2" boards with a piece of mirror underneath as a collection plate.
I would have started building mine, but as I mentioned, the author mentioned something mounting a bearing on the other side, but he didn't say what kind or what he used, nor were the pictures of that side any good. I had thought of maybe cuttin a short 3/4" lenght of the same pipe, drill a hole in the support, tap the pipe in, then grease the threaded rod. Using some more nuts and washers this could work as a bearing.
Since I have sooo much time, I just downloaded a cad program, I'll see if i can get some designs done over the next few days. I have some other comments about what size screen to use, but I've rambled on long enough already.

Thanks Jaxxx. More food for thought. I've been thinking, but still not building. Vacation time coming soon. Who knows?

Building my tubler now. I am using a pasta extruder drive, all thread, nuts and bolts, square tubing and a plastic box. The hard part was finding screen. I could not find silk screen for t-shirts. A freind told me about paint straining cloth, fine mesh and it works fine.
