I been reading a bit of Molasses is Sweet Organic Goodness posted by Organic Rasta and I'm finding it interesting that plant food can be sourced beyond the specialist manufactured products.

Suddenly I've got the above link open and I'm reading stuff about dog food, poop, and on another page there was something about using the piss from a red fox (.pdf link) to deter fox prey from the grow room.

Anyone else into using pet food, molasses, grass clipping or chopped weeds as Soil Amendments?

Hey, cool.
I'm a member over at GardenWeb!

Yeah, I use unsulfured molasses in my soil mix.

I would not use grass clippings or weeds because the decomposition creates heat and actually USES nitrogen. You have to compost them first. Not to mention I have enough trouble weeding my vegetable patch without having to worry about weeding the grow room too from random weed seeds.

Thanks for your reply stinkyattic. I'm thinking it might pay me to take a course in horticulture, I'm am soo interested in growing stuff.

What kinda results do you get with your amendments?
What do you grow on your veggy patch?

I wouldn't use grass clipping either hahaha because I notice that grass contains a lot of water and clippings just sweat instantly when I bag them. I do have a 200L compost bin and I'm wondering what I can put in there to make the resulting compost super rich... any ideas?

Compost enhancer that has beneficial bacteria in it.
And make sure to keep your compost moist and turn it as often as you can.
For super richness, maybe a little wood ash, some eggshells, some earthworms, and of course lots and lots of chopped up vegetable matter.
You know all those posts where people ask if urine is good for your plants?
Go ahead and have a go on your compost heap if you get the urge.

Since I started using molasses I have definitely noticed my plants smell stronger. Mmmm.

The veggie patch has several different variteies of tomatoes and peppers totalling about 30 plants, 4 hills of squashes (zucchini, acorn, and cantaloupe), onions, garlic, and a very comprehensive herb collection.

Here's some organic red peppers- corne di toro, peperoncini, and a lonely jalapeno.

Thanks again for your reply stinkyattic. Ummm, I can see the heat offa those little monsters, I can see deep pan topped with everything (or most things, not sure about squash on pizza) you grow...

I'm goin to check out this compost enhancer and probly research the beneficial bacteria sides of things. This could be very handy to enable me to do a totally organic grow once a year with a superior compost. And since the molasses has brought forth good results for you (tried and tested) I don't see why I won't incorporate this immediately with my 60 AK47 clones which have just been vegging a week almost. When, and what dose of molasses do you use and do you reduce your base nutrient to compensate or anything?

I haven't been turning the compost, I keep telling myself I'm busy everytime I take the lid off and a billion flies and larve greet me. As november 5th approaches I'm sure there'll be plenty wood ash knocking about to chuck in. I don't do dairy products so eggshells are a miss unless I can somehow get them from neighbors or friends. Would raw fish guts and scales do anything in there or should I keep it meat free?

I hear that putting a damp stretch of material over the lawn then beating it with the flat side of a shovel brings up worms. Do I have to touch them when I want my compost? Ewwwwwwwwwwww!! And I'm a pescitarian so plenty fruit and veg waste matter; thas all that is in the compost bin at the moment.

Do you have a patch in the garden or at an allotment? I ask too many questions but I dun't care cause someone has the answers!

Don't know about the worm collection technique. Just go to a bait shop and 'rescue' some crawlers.
No meat goes in the compost heap.
Molasses is during flower, I just glop a glob into my watering can with everything else. Not very scientific, maybe 1 teaspoon per gallon, mixed well.

The sqaush is part of my Italian food garden!

Acorn squash soup:
Put a little olive oil in a saucepan
Add a head of garlic which you have already roasted
Add 1 acorn squash, peeled and cubed
Stir around for a minute or so
Add 1 can vegetable broth
Simmer until squash is cooked tender and almost mushy
In a separate pan, make a roux of 1 square inch butter and 2 tbsp flour, cook until not quite changing color yet.
Dump in contents of first pan
Mush up the solid ingredients with a potato masher, leaving some chunks if you like
Whisk until smooth
Salt and pepper to taste
Serve garnished with parsely and freshly grateed nutmeg
Yummy
