Thinking of Moving to AK
Hey guys, It's been in my goal to move to Sitka for a quite a few years now, and now that I've got a shitload of money saved up and convinced my girl to go, it's a reality. I've visited the place twice and in about 7 months I'll be moving. I grew up in a very small town in AZ which has gotten INVADED by people with summer homes and it breaks my heart to be in my town while all of my childhood dreams are being destroyed and replaced with Malls and golf courses... Well anyway, I have a few questions and any insight would be appreciated:
How harsh are the Cannabis laws in AK??
How hard is it to score bud in the Sitka area??
Thanks a lot for any replys. Also, any helpful tips about adjusting to Alaska are welcome

well i grew up there...and it has taken me ten years to relize money and living it up isn't everything. i miss alaska bad. the bud is plentiful and it is legal on the state level. sitka is very rural i would not live on a small island but each to his own..goodluck and find a hobby to get you through the 9 months of hell.

I live in AK, all 32 years of my life.
Like any place it has it has it's ups and down. Like Yeag said, weed on the state level is, for the most part, legal to posses in the home. I think it's 2 ounces or something like that. It's illegal to buy, sell and grow. I also think the punishment is light for growing up to 24-25 plants. I can't quote the law, but in reality, it's a slap on the wrist.
Federal law is the same as any other state, illegal illegal and... Illegal.
As for specifics on Sitka, I can't help you there... I do know that's just too small and too remote for my taste. Home life in the "big" city has been stressing me out more and more over the years as the pop grows, but as the saying goes, if you can't stand the heat, get an AC.. or an AK. something like that.
I've lived all over the state in my short existence, I'd consider moving to the "Valley" (Wasilla, Palmer) if the good jobs that I'm qualified for were out there. A boat load of people commute (about 40-50 miles one way) each day from those City's and with the price of gas... eh, I'm not an import driver, and I get road rage like a sumbitch, so I can't convince myself or my significant other to move out there.
You can hit me up with other questions if you'd like, I can try to answer what I know, or BS what I don't. You'd be able to tell the difference.

There are a few places in Anch where that could be a concern, but for the most part, I agree completely.
I may bitch about living here, especially in the ending winter months, but all it takes is a week or so visiting people down there to realize it ain't all that bad.
And in response to getting buds... IMHO, it can be dry at times too... like NOW. lol
You thinking about slow dotna or Kenai?

Werd. Hope it works out for ya.
I just leaned how to use a fly rod last year, I'm going to try to get out of town one of these weekends and brush up on the art.

Just...don't...move...to... the Pribilofs.....
AAAGH!
(Or Unalaska/Dutch HArbor- it smells funky, at best)
I miss Alaska though. I had originally planned to sit on my house until the market picks back up, then head up to northern Vermont... but the fucking New Yorkers with their Escalades and time shares have pretty much ruined that. So Alaska it is! I might even -OMG!!!- get to use that fisheries management degree some day!

Hey everyone thanks for the replys. Sitka sounds like a very nice place for my tastes, but the only difficulty I know i'm going to have is getting a job, I need to arrange one before I get there but I don't really know where to start.

That's what I'm saying, man. I live in the white mountains of AZ and that's what I live for... camping, backpacking, hunting, fishing.. just the outdoors. That's the reason i'm leaving home now.. it's just not the same. AK seemed like the perfect place to relocate

That's great news about the legality situation. I like the thought of not having to stress about neighbors finding out about my few plants.

I have a good friend working at Chena Hot Springs, 60 miles from Fairbanks ... I daydream daily, about driving up for a look-see ... growing up in Chicago area, and living 3 years in Montana, has me 'partially' acclimated ... my 'hermit' personality demands a change, too damned many Bay Area transplants here in my formerly almost-unspoiled mountains of NoCal ... the friggin' tweekers have taken over this area, (hopefully, the Alaskans haven't discovered meth yet, or tweekers can't handle the cold) ...

They're meth heads up here. Not quite the epidemic the other states are having, but give it time...

do yourselves a favor, and take your tweekers on hunting trips (be sure to tell them to dress warmly, I suggest a fur coat)

lol if I moved to the frozen north the weed would be low on my list of concerns. Decrim up there is nice and all, but weighing the positives of being able to smoke vs. the negatives of an unusual job market and LOOONG winters... I'd certainly hope to have other reasons to be there (fishing, anyone? long x-c ski trips? ahhhhh.... )

I'd like to treat them like a farmer would a ground hog. Little .223, bottle of whiskey and wait for them to pop their heads up.

When you hit that LOOONG part of winter, weed amazingly moves right up the list of concerns ladder.

See that is something that concerns me. I don't want to feel like I am basically getting stoned and hibernating for several months, just waiting for the sun to come up again. What I'm saying is that I feel that if you are going to go live somewhere so extreme, you need to be prepared to either make ways to entertain yourself for the winter.. or succumb to the temptation of just diving into your headstash and ignoring it all, while your hair gets grayer and your wrinkles deepen. IMHO that's no way to live.

There's less tweakers? Really? I've lived in Arizona my whole life, i'm so used to methheads it's sad... That nasty drug has taken over, not only are kids here getting addicted to it at disturbingly young ages, it's mostly the blue collar workers who are twacked out of their minds.

You are so right about the list of concerns thing. But seeing how this is a Cannabis forum, I just asked for info containing mostly to cannabis I'll get my help finding work, home, ect. from somewhere else (no offense, of course). I've just got a feeling there's better places to go for financial help than a Cannabis forum But you are right, weed isn't anywhere near the main concern on my mind right now.
