I am growing a single plant in a cabinet and couldn't seem to get the humidity below 70%......I didn't want to spend $120+ on a dehumidifier.....So I just put a cup of silica gel (used for drying flowers) in the corner of the cabinet. Now the humidity stays between 45% and 55% at all times......Not sure if everyone already knew this but I just figured it out and thought I'd share.......

Do you have to replace the silica gel often?

What do you do with it once saturated? Can it be regenerated by warming in a low oven?

I don't claim to know the first thing about growing anything; hell, I can't make a Chia pet sprout.

I've only had the gel in the box for 3 days......it's not very wet at all......don't think I'll need to change it for at least another week.......Once saturated just pop it in the microwave for a couple mins.

Good idea though mate, even for the little extra work involved*checking it and micro* it still is worth it to save the 100+ for a dehumidifier. nice !

....had the gel in the box for about 6 days......once the powder goes from blue to pink it needs to be put in a shallow pan and placed in the oven for a couple hours...I place the gel in a see through container so I can see how much blue is left........def more work than a dehumidifier but a lot less money......One thing.....if the box is not fully enclosed ( other than intake and exhaust) the gel won't last as long (it will be taking the moisture from the entire room).....hope people have good luck with this.....it's nice to be able to add to this site....oh by the way found this the other day.....

It's called the Dream Baby Dehumidifying Dry Egg.....it's $20 and can be found at babies R us......just put it in the box....it turns pink....then put in microwave on med heat for 10min....then put back in box.....

This hobby is quickly becoming an obsession......

by "in the box" do you mean like, in the room or in the actual box it came in?......

I just started a new job and I have a pretty much unlimited supply of the little packets of silica gel you get in new shoe boxes etc
I was wondering if this would work for my grow box and it seems like the answer is yes

wow this is perfect! thanks so much. I have a small hydroponic grow box growing 3 plants. so far my plants are doing great but the humidity is way too high (I have the same thermometer as u, lol). But yea i couldn't think of a solution and was getting worried. Then I found this post. THANK YOU. Where can u buy this gel?
