July 1st, you're being watched?

There's this article I heard of from people, apparently some new group will be watching everything you do online,

read on:
Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

the first paragraph is where the main information is.

What do you all think?

Seem like another step for them to control what we do. Another words, limiting are freedom.

But I believe they've been doing this for awhile now.

Very true words, man. See, that's how evil rulers work nowadays; they don't change everything RIGHT away... people wouldn't stand for that. But what they do is very gradually make innocent baby steps towards their final solution. Those baby steps alone aren't worth a protest, so we leave it each time. Then you wake up into a whole new world again. It's terrible.

"Newspaper reports indicate that the proposed agreement would empower security officials at airports and other international borders to conduct random ex officio searches of laptops, MP3 players, and cellular phones for illegally downloaded or "ripped" music and movies. Travelers with infringing content would be subject to a fine and may have their devices confiscated or destroyed."

wow, that's just crazy! So if you got your laptop all passworded and files encrypted, would they just assume you're smuggling copyrighted material and take your lappy from you?!

It's such a violation of privacy... and doing things without need for warrants!

What the hell is next, imprisoning people who have photographic memories?

It'll be like in the movie "1984" with Big Brother. It's a disgusting future if you open your eyes wide enough to see it.

Just last night I spoke with a head Tech guy for Bear Sterns questioning him in regards to security.

I did not see this was being imposed on June 1st in the article.

That was also someones impression of the "TRADE AGREEMENT"

I would like to see the actual documents. I can not see them with the security the way it is now in all Airports implementing these crazy LAWS.

The Patriot Act is one thing that is a complete removal of all right. There is no halius corpus when it comes to that. I would imagine this has something to do with terorism and yes if they want to flip the script and turn the laws to us they can just like they can with the Patriot Act.

As far as protecting Sony,Warner Bros or some other billion dollar Co I think our country has far bigger issues.

Also when I spoke to the tech friend I was told on a fourm you are safe unless they give your email out then they can have the service provider track your IP. Searches cookies all that other stuff he said you are safe. He also said if they want your IP and are tracking you security protection does not mean shit. Unless you mask that HD with a black disk so they can not recover any data.

I picked up this program Sweeper which comes with a Bleach Disk program.

Well that just my two cents

Analysis
ACTA trade agreement negotiation lacks transparency, Intellectual Property Watch, Sydney Morning Herald, Globe and Mail, Calgary Herald, Jamie Shaw,Torrent Freak,Tech Dirt,Daily Tech,Webhosting Poland,Slashdot, TheNewFreedom, and many others.

Front page news in Canada, but has yet to hit the main stream daily's outside of Canada and Australia, likely due to early reports that looked at that angle, rather than a serious trade, transparency and developmental equity issue.
Summary

In 2007 a select handful of the wealthiest countries began a treaty-making process to create a new global standard for intellectual property rights enforcement, which was called, in a piece of brilliant marketing, the "Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement" (the agreement does not cover currency fraud).

ACTA is spearheaded by the United States along with the European Commission, Japan, and Switzerland — which have large intellectual property industries. Other countries invited to participate in ACTA’s negotiation process are Canada, Australia, Korea, Mexico and New Zealand. Noticeably absent from ACTA’s negotiations are leaders from developing countries who hold national policy priorities that differ from the international intellectual property industry.

A “Discussion Paper on a Possible Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement” was reportedly provided to select lobbyists in the intellectual property industry, but not to public interest organizations concerned with the subject matter of the proposed treaty.[1

how the fuck would they determine if the content you had on your device was pirated? just scrolling through an iPod, there is no way to tell whether it was ripped off a CD, bought from an online store (iTunes, etc.) or downloaded "illegally". same thing with movies. there are programs to rip DVDs to portable formats, as well as downloading them from online stores.

and really, is the airport and other international borders really the hot spot for swapping warez? it already takes half a day to get through all the security shit at the airport...now they want to make sure everyone has legit copies of the new maroon 5 while they try to enjoy their flight?

stoooooopid.

Well, they might be able to tell by the song's ID3 tag. A lot of people who download music off P2P don't have their songs named correctly, while legit songs COME with the proper tags.

Ex. Legit = Artist: Pink Floyd Song: Brain Damage

Non-legit= Artist: <blank> Song: pink floyd - braindamage

You know what I mean.

damn good point. I had forgotten about all the "legal" mp3's and movies you can buy to download lol. And it's pefectly ok to make a backup copy of anything you already own, which includes transferring your music from CD to MP3 players, DVD's to DivX, etc... as long as you're not gonna sell or distribute the copies.

And there's no way for them to know if what you have is legit or not, unless they scan every single file for CRC checksums against already known pirated copies floating around... VERY futile.

I highly doubt anything is going to really be enforced... its just another law to help placate the entertainment industry so they'll shut their rich asses up, then LEO and security can focus on real threats.

These aren't the WaReZ you're looking for...
