EXXON VALDEZ settlement.. THROWN OUT by US supreme court

Exxon Valdez $2.5 billion oil spill ruling overturned - Yahoo! News

I could fill the page with these ... and it still wouldent be enough.

Just when you start to think " hey , maybe the 'state of things' isnt really all that bad "

Exxon made 2.5 billion in 2 days last quarter. Those greedy bastards however dont want to pay for destroying thousands of peoples economy and livleyhood, not to mention the toll it took on the ecosystem up there. Fuckers.

Very dis-heartening indeed

You know your country has no morals when you can dump oil on an entire state, and only pay pocket change in damage. Makes me sad we let those Justices in, they are a disgrace.

WOW I was under the impression that it had all been settled way back in the 90's. They held out this long whining over the price to get it slashed down?! Ok so paying out money equal to damages would be slightly ok if it was an honest mistake / accident... but the idiot was drunk!

inconceivable!

Yeah, this is screwed up. The original punitive damages were set at 4.5 billion, knocked down to 2.5 billion on appeal, and now knocked down to 0.5 biliion on appeal to the Supreme Court. Maybe if Exxon's tanker captains were as good as its lawyers this disaster never would have happened.

I think its time that the people of this country drop their false sense of entitlement to life, and comfort and actually do something to make a stand against the caitiff tyrants running the show.

Revolution? (not Ron Paul)

somehow, i can't help but think that people were paid off, any intelligent person would know that this needs to be done. If a company can rake in the 2.5 billion in just two days, they shouldn't even have a problem giving it back to the environment, but this goes to show you that money is all they care about. Whatever, I hope we go into a depression so that all of the money these greedy pigs rake in means NOTHING but toilet paper. This makes me so angry, I can't believe this is happening.

This really pisses me off!!! I cannot believe it, drunk or not, Exxon is responsible for the actions of its' ship, just as I am with my car! I don't get off, for letting someone else drive; This whole thing sucks. They should be fined enough to replace the dead birds as restitution to Alaska! But, i wonder is this is just fore-play to really screw Alaska with all new oil wells and no land for wildlife or wetlands??

I have been kayaking in Prince William sound where the tanker crashed and spilled. This was in 1997. As of then Exxon had publicly declared that all the oil had been cleaned up at great cost to them. There was no more remaining oil spilled. I spent 30 days hopping from island to island, camping out, and all one had to do on a number of islands was flip over a few rocks and there was oil underneath. This oil was from the Valdez, and was still not cleaned up. This should come as no surprise to anyone.
The resilient wildlife had made an incredible comeback and i had a dreamlike experience. Yet it was sad even then that Exxon was not being held accountable.

Its good to hear that the wildlife has bounced back

All this from a company making such record profits right now its sickening

Exxon posts quarterly, annual profit records - Feb. 1, 2008

I rememeber a chain letter floating around last year calling for an exxon boycott

Unfortunalty it's unlikely that any form of consumer boycott could have an effect on gas prices(exxons pocket-book) nationally
