Brooklyn School - 100 Pregnant

A public school in America has hit the headlines after reports surfaced that 100 of its 800 female students were pregnant at the same time. Paul Robeson High School in Brooklyn, New York is at the centre of a media frenzy following the astonishing figures that showed just under 15 per cent of its female population were with child.
Principal Gerald Morrow told a local news reporter that various factors had contributed to the high number of teenage pregnancies at his school. He said, “A lot of things happening at home or not happening at home like absentee fathers [have contributed.] We don’t look at [the girls] like ‘Oh you’ve made a mistake, we look at them and work out how we can get them to the next stage. Like ‘how can we help them to start thinking about graduation?’’”
Together with the school’s advisory team, Morrow hopes to transform a dilapidated former drugs den adjacent to the school into a day care, providing sufficient childcare in close proximity for students who are young mothers.
Van Vincent, of VLV development, the company responsible for the construction of the site said: “We have to provide a safe environment for them and some sort of support for them.”
