They're billed as energy-efficient, but compact fluorescent bulbs are getting a dim review in a new study.

The study, published in Engineering and Technology magazine, shows the energy-efficient light bulbs lose on average 22 percent of their brightness over their lifetime, the BBC reports.

Compact fluorescents reduce energy consumption by up to 80 percent compared to traditional bulbs. But the study concludes consumers were being misled by the bulbs' packaging, suggesting that although the bulbs save energy that savings may come at the cost of long-term brightness.

"It may be deliberate, but because of the standards set, you end up with figures that are exaggerated compared to what people really experience," the magazine's editor, Dickson Ross, told the BBC.

Of the 18 bulbs tested by the magazine for over 10,000 hours, three stopped altogether. Traditional bulbs lose only up to 7 percent of brightness over 2,000 hours.

After reading a bunch of threads here, I decided to buy the high tech garden supply 400w HPS to keep my basil, peppers, other herbs, etc. going through the winter.
Its definitely bright, but it doesn't seem as hot as other people seem to make of them so I was thinking I might have an under powered ballast or something.
I can keep my hand just 6 inches below the bulb and it only feels warm leaving it there a minute or two (this is after the bulb has warmed up).

Just curious, as from other talk I was expecting to have to get a cooltube, and now it seems like I can keep them 8 inches away with no trouble... whats going on?:wtf:

Long time grower seeks LED information.

If you follow the links in my signature, you will see that I am a long time grower. I came here to cannabis.com after overgrow.com was shut down. I have dabbled with cultivation growing in totes, cabinets, and closets. I have also done multiple multiple grows in both soil and hydroponic media using both CFLs and HPS lightning.

I would like to think that that I am fairly adept in all things cannabis; however, I need help from my fellow readers in regards to LED lightning information.

Quite a few months back shit hit the fan so to speak and to cover my ass, I was forced to get rid of EVERYTHING. From containers to lights to air pumps, from hydroton to pipes to rolling pappers to nutes... To yes... even distruction of my beloved cabinet... even my grow books and journals. :(

Bottom line is that I feel that it is safe to start back up, only this time I wish to keep my grow on the smallest of scales using 2 steralite totes. (Because God almighty I miss my sacred herb  ) One for veg/clones, the other for small scale SoG flowering.

Given the nature of the confined space I will be utilizing, I feel that LEDs due to efficency and the substantially insignificiant amount of heat produced will be ideal for the miniature scale in which I wish to employ.

I have read the boards many times over searching for quality LED grow lightning information; however, the only information that I can ever find seem s to deal with much larger scale grows.

I guess my question for those adept with LED lightning technology is this:

How many watts of LEDs would one need to produce a small scale 1ftx1ft1ft container with between 4 and 6 plants SoG style, and what would your reccomendation(s) be for optimum flowering R/B spectrum wavelenghts for quality yields?

Sorry for the lenghty post. Thank you in advanced for your time.

Hey everybody, I am currently running in a 2500 sq ft steel building, with a 28x28 built inside of it . I power 20 1000w hydro farm hoods using AG POWER..(AGRICUTURAL RATING FROM PG&E STANDARD 240 ) I also run 2 small AC units and the power bill is right about $2200 per month($100 per light and $100 per AC)
I am moving to a wharehouse in town that is relatively new. My electrician has not come to check it out yet , but is confident that it will have "277 power" which he says ist type of power used in big buildings to make running all the lights more economical.

I sold the last setup to the owner of the building I am in now (why tear down a good thing?). so i am in the market for another 24 big ones right now, and if my new place does have this "277 POWER" I would like to know the following;
IS THIS GOING TO SAVE ME MONEY ON MY PG&E
WHAT BALLAST COMPANYS MAKE 277 BALLAST'S
HAS ANYONE EVER USED 277 POWER BEFORE /
IS THERE ANY DOWNSIDE TO USING 277 POWER?

Any insight on this topic would be greatly appreciated
thanks..

I seem to have a nice bagseed plant that is likely to show sex soon, my main question is: I am using a 400 watt metal halide (which kills the rinky-dink cfl's I had)... What will be the difference, when flowering, when compared to an HPS of the same wattage?

I dont have a switchable ballast, so its not an option... tho I have seen some conversion bulbs, are they worthwhile?

heres pics of the 'hopeful' candidate lol
the flowering chamber is 3' x 4' the plan is to switch to sog after harvest (about 3 weeks), using 3 gallon growbags, and flowering only when the clones are 6-8" tall. my question, im planning on putting 24 plants under the 400. how does that number sound for you experienced soggers?

So i'm tryna decide between two inexpensive (cheap?) grow light systems. The first one is this, from High Tech Garden supply:

High Tech Garden Supply

with MH conversion bulb and shipping included, it's like 185 bucks, a pretty good deal I'd say.

The other option I found is an unknown from amazon, check it out:

Amazon.com: 400 Watt Electronic Ballast Hydroponic Grow Light Lamp: Home & Garden

This one comes with the mH conversion bulb and with shipping is only like 167 bucks, so I'd save about 20 bucks, but I'm not sure who the manufacturer of this would be. It says it's an electronic ballast system, which makes it seem even more unreasonably cheap. Any thoughts or experience on either one of these systems? Thanks for any help!
