First REAL grow, cfl's start to finish, bagseed
Finally built up enough funds to start. Im usually very busy so cut me some slack when I comes to the replies and updates. But I promise this will be the first thread I visit when I logon.
Also, this is a poormans grow, your gonna see alot of corners cut, this is really just a proof of concept for my so I can get a feel for it and trust myself with some better equiptment next time around.
Heres the setup so far.
For lighting I have 2 45watt warm whites, and 4 23watt 6500k's. This is for veg only, I will increase the light power dramatically with the coming of flower.
As of now I have no timer so its 24 hour lighting, this is next on my list of purchases.
Using organic potting soil with about 33.3% perlite.
All seeds are bag seeds collected from all kinds of different strains, mixed em up and picked out 10 seeds.
These ten went into a cup of water to soak over night.
All but one sank. After filtering the seeds out of the water I lost one to the blimey deep. The other 9 went into the paper towel process, most popped over night, a couple took an extra day. I was left with 6 viable and 3 non compliant seeds. Threw the 6 in my party cups and here we are today...
As of now I have no fans in there, the temps stay between 70 and 77, I will add a fan for some air flow later.
First signs of growth.

Is it ok to remove a seed shell or should I just let it be?

Day 2
They are stretching a bit, need to move the lights closer. My light hanging device is basically nylon pull string I grabbed from work. Its a bit difficult to raise and lower accurately. I may have to buy those little yoyo devices, ive only seen them online tho, anybody seen them at HD or Lowes? Heres a pic of the ladies(hopefully>_<)
And I did held that seed shell to fall off, looks like the back right corner needs it done also.

Try not to touch it with your skin if you do take it off. Just blow on it a little to see if you can get it to come off. If it doesn't fall off I usually leave it.
The plant will take care of those kinds of things itsself. No need to over work yourself...

They look ok so far. Just as EXP13 said, the plants will usually take care of those things. However, I did have one situation where one plant just refused to release and it died in the seed shell. Weird kinda. It got to about an inch high with the seed still attached.

Day 4
Not much has changed, actually gave em a full on water instead of just spritzing. I really need to get a fan on them soon, need to strengthen the stalk. My perlite is turning yellow, why? Temps are steady about 77º, pretty good without a fan, and thats with the thermometer in with the plants.
That spot on the bottom right corner with the messy leaf was from the seed shell that I removed...shouldnt have touched it cause the other one fell right off. >_<
I know its a little blurry...deal with it.

See. If you fuck with mother nature she will fuck with you. lol.
Nah, they look perfectly fine. Not sure exactly why your perlite is turning yellow. Mine usually doesn't. Occasionally it does but I think it's simply the dirt staining them with what ever nutrient stains the perlite I'd presume...

Day 6
More of the same...
Ive noticed that they are very flimsy and will fall over when you water them? Is that normal, im sure they dont have very much root growth, and im also using 24/0 so theres not dark period to kick the root growth into full swing. They lookin droopy to you guys? Do you absolutely need a fan on them even if the temps are nominal? Because im starting to find out that fans are a seasonal item...as in nobody carries any during the winter, only the heater fans. Thanks to those who have been stopping by and looking, might be a long weekend so dont expect me till monday!

they do look a little droopy. Are you sure you have good drainage from those cups. Maybe the soil isn't drying out enough before you water it next.
As far as your fan problem, I know a fan blowing on your plants can help increase the stalk strength. I just bought a couple of fans recently. I got mine at target. They're right next to the space heaters. At least they were in my town.

My soil has excellent drainage, too good I think, thats why the little seedling will topple over if I pour water in there. Good lookin out havent tried target yet, I usually dont support the french.

Indeed.
However, I think I'm seeing some kind of discoloration of your leaves. Could be a bad thing.
Post some more pictures.

Day 9
Yeah there does look to be some discoloration. Maybe from gettin some water on the leaves, its still growing at the same pace as the rest. Could it be the metalic pan they are sitting in reflecting back underneath? Who knows...
I talked to a friend of mine at work, hes currently growing some type of blueberry skunk strain. He said I could have as many clones as I wanted but I think until I get better equipted I will stick to my bagseed, its a better suprise in the end, cause you really have no idea what strain it is. Anyways, heres what you've come for.

You cant really see any discoloration with the naked eye, atleast not my eyes.

It appears to me as if you're overwatering just a little.
They look very healthy but are showing a few tell-tale signs of being a little swamped. I'd cut back on the watering by about 1 day.

Santa, Your plants look very healthy. If I may give some humble yet unsolicited advice, consider trimming the top of your cup a little. I don't know if its just because of the pictures, but your plants seem a little deep in the cup; not too deep where any damage is being done though.
I get discoloration on some of my leaves because i get water on them every now and then. Its nothing that I would worry about too much, unless you splash your plants. sometimes light burn can be | |
