hey weedhound,

yeah, thats what we thought, but 5-6 days of attempting to fix that seemed to have no effect. we did a flush of all the plants yesterday, for the 3 affected plants its twice now at least. got some great flow out of the pots and didnt seem to change. our tallest "jack" got worse as the day went on today. and were not positive, but we believe we saw a couple of the bugs. extremely tiny, white body, worm shape, 1/4 to 1/2 mm sitting on the center petiole. is this what they look like stinky?

thanks WH for your help hope we get it down

well my bible is eluding me but a found this:

The more common product which can be applied that
poses little risk or hazard is INSECTICIDAL SOAP. Used
by many "natural farmers" and regarded as not being
a true insecticide, Insecticidal Soap will quickly
kill off thriving thrips. It won't hurt plants or
produce which is growing but it will work on just
about any nuisance pest which is feeding and present
during applications. The big limitation of this
material is that it won't provide any residual; once
applied and dried it is essentially gone. This means
you will have to repeat treatments as often as
needed which is usually twice a week during growing
seasons and more if local populations are abundant.
If the thrips are too persistent and you want
something a little stronger which will provide some
residual, use PERMETHRIN CONCENTRATE. This is a
true insecticide which is odorless, easy to mix and
works on just about any pest in and around the
garden. Since it works well for whiteflies and aphids,
Permethrin is a natural for plants which are subject
to a wide range of pests. Most importantly, it is
the strongest product to use on fruits and vegetables
so if you have a garden you are trying to protect,
this is your best bet. It has a complete label which
includes just about any target pest, any plant - fruit
or vegetable - and 1-2 weeks of residual. Probably
the most common active ingredient being used today
by farmers in the agricultural market, Permethrin
has a wide range of uses and presents a low hazard
or danger to mammals

You may have two problems- the RUST colored spots from one source and the silver trails from the other, or the rust spots could be scarring from the damage of the trails... lol confused?
I think you have pests causing the trails. The spots COULD be k def, or they could be scarring. A bloom fert with more K isn't a terrible idea for next time if that's the case, and I doubt you have lockout keeping up on your other stuff so well. But either way there's the bug problem. A pair of pyrethrin bombs set off 4 days apart will kill ANYTHING bug-like in there. Go! DOOOOO IT!!! Get'em.

As stated earlier, I'm new here, but I'm also a grower wannabe. One question - I thought one of the benefits of indoor growth was the likely elimination of the insect factor. How would these insects even begin to bring their pesky little asses into, what has been, such a beautiful picture? Do you suppose there were larvae in the soil? Is there anything an indoor grower can do to prep the soil so that this doesn't become a familiar incident?

Thank ya

hey sproketman,

elimination is hard to achieve, but yes you should be able to control them and ill be getting the bombs today. no, i doubt they were in the soil due to using Ocean forest indoor growing soils. also they probably would have shown much earlier. the room is "near" sealed but any thing that small is will find its way in. growing plants attract insects, such is life. ive seen in researching this there are pyrethrin powders...so maybe mixing in or dusting the top of the pots with it as it appears thats where they breed. (see stinky learn something new every day) pyrethrin seems to control many different bugs too so i wouldnt see where it would hurt.

Plenty of ways unfortunately.

Eggs can be brought in attached to clothes or shoes on a gardener in even the best sealed greenhouse.

The little buggers are sneaky.

SnSsteath, you have my best wishes! We're all rooting for the good health of the ladies!

Bombing should work, but you can also dip. I've found that spraying doesn't work because it's nearly impossible to cover all surface areas of the plants. Get a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with an insecticide solution of your choice, the stronger and more toxic the better. No tree huggin safe or natural crap, unless you just like wasting time and money. Hold the dirt in your pots with a towel or piece of Styrofoam, and turn the plants upside down and dunk them. Shake them gently to get all the air bubbles out, then put them back into your grow. Also thouroghly drench the soil, pots and all surfaces of the grow area. Normally you would need to pull your lights about 4 feet back until the plants dry, but I don't think you need to worry about it in your situation. I highly doubt that they will burn with LED lights that far away. Of course if you want to easily get rid of all pests, use a No Pest Strip by Spectracide. You and others probably don't think it will work, but you and others are wrong if that's the case. The strips work wonderfully, and of course are the easiest and cheapest solution possible. Just turn off your ventilation for one night, and in the morning, all pests will be dead. I promise, as long as you follow the instructions and double the recommended dose. As far as eggs or babies, leave the strips in there for a week and everything will be dead. Really. If you don't believe me, as many others have not, it only costs about $8 to try one. Wouldn't that be worth the gamble, even if you bought 2?
