Hi everyone!
Been trying to get get some good buds going since June. My first attempt withered away 2 weeks into flowering because of a mishap with a home recipe for insect control. I had a favorite plant that I took a clone from and now am back into the swing of things. After the clone started taking off I let it veg for 6 weeks under a 2x4ft screen. I was concerned about the plant getting pot bound in its 3.5 gal pot so I switched it into flower when the screen was about 50% full. After the stretch it looks like the screen is about 70% full. It is now into week 3 of flowering and it is looking wonderful with about 150 bud sites 1/2in-4in tall. The plant was really quick to get into flowering and is already showing lots of flower production. Do the buds get taller through flowering or do they stay the same height after the "stretch"??? The setup is a basement storage room grow with 18-23 watt cfls. Heat is an issue, gets to be 85+ sometimes but no apparent change in plant behavior. Should I make the higher temps an issue or just keep things as they are? What are the drawback of high heat in flowering? Any input would be wonderful!!!

yo man-
posting pics... click Go Advanced under the quick reply text box, then scroll down to Manage Attachments. from there you can upload pics. flowers getting taller... here's a link for ya... its more about keeping headroom under control but it explains the 40% stretch/60% fattening thing. hope that answers that for ya. perhaps thats something to do with the training involved with scrog? hopefully some veteran scroggers can help you with that question, cause i can't. just raising more questions, damn me...

You added a fan in the room, or is it pulling air in from a cooler location?
Cross ventilation would help out with the heat.... pull cooler air in from another location, and allow it out of the grow area opposite of where it comes in. You have 18 23watt cfl's in there.... all across the top? or on the sides and back as well? Can you post a pic of how you have your lights set up for me? Looks like you have bathroom vanity light bars in there....? Last edited by serpentine5; Nov-12-2008 at 19:18. |

Day 25 into flowering and looking good. I installed a 500cfm exhaust fan and have a 250 cfm intake fan directed towards the canopy to bring down the temperature to around 80 degrees. Now a new problem/concern, the humidity is around 35% will it just dry out quicker or is their any other problems with low humidity? The light is three six socket vanity lights with a hood built from that reflective insulation. I run 12-2700Kelvin 23watt, 5-6500Kelvin 26watt, and 1-3000kelvin 40watt above project X on the right.
Do the math and it is 29,800 lumens @ 446watts total. The tube connected to the hood is for a planned venting system. |

Bro, I gotta tell ya.... those new pix you posted... she is looking damn fine.... she was my daughter I would be keepin a loaded shot gun by the door....
Hard to believe that the canopy is just one single plant.... From the first pic, of the top view of the lights where you can see the vent hose... I am guessing she is not in a grow box? If she isnt in a self contained box, how are you protecting her from light leakage during the dark 12? Where are you buying your CFLs? I shop for my household CFLs mainly at wally world, and the highest wattage CFL I can find there is like a 65 equivalent output in the shape you have.... I can get 100 watt equivalent in a floodlight but not in the spiral. Home Depot or Lowes? And how do you know the lumins? I am looking at a package for some household CFLs and it doesnt say anywhere on the packaging. Anyways.... Great job so far.... hope she smokes as well as she looks! I think larger watt cfl bulbs put out more heat than multiple smaller watt bulbs, they take up less room too. I am dedicated to running the smaller ones. If your going to buy bulbs look for a Kelvin temperature and lumen rating, if they don't list it don't bother. You can find the 6500 kelvin 26watt GE at walmart. The other ones I got at a local hardware store. Those bulbs are Sylvanias. Try looking online for an economy pack for the sylvanias, great price for great lighting. As for the room it is just a 4x6x7 in a dark corner of the basement where no outside light enters. Thanks for the interest. Are you doing or planning a CFL grow serpentine?

To get the canopy as such I had a long veg time, like 6-8 weeks, can't really remember, with a plant that has really bushy characteristics. I took the clone and rooted it in a jiffy cube and once it rooted I put it in its pot you see today. The screen is eight inches from the top of the soil so when the plant got about 6 inches I topped the plant to promote side growth. Once the side shoots started growing well I topped them with the FIM technique, seeming I am new to it all I think I only had three successful FIM tops out of 12 attempts. Practice makes perfect. Then it was time to sit back and let mother nature do its work. I would let it grow for a week and see the branch tips rise up through the canopy. I would then take the branch tips and pull them through the next screen hole making sure they were even and distributed through out the screen. You really need to plan on how the plant is going the grow, where it is going to be dense or sparse, and how many budsites per screen hole(I'd say 3-6 at most or if it is a cola try for only 2 per screen hole). If you can't tame a branch using the screen only, use plastic coated twist ties to hold it to the screen. One thing that I did that some might shun me for is fan leaf removal. I removed around 10% of the fan leaves which obstructed light from budding sites around 3 weeks before flower. I also removed all vegetative growth from under the screen 4 weeks before flower to put all the plants energy into the growth above the screen. I tried not to prune in flowering as I hear that it will diminish yield and vigorous growth. If in flowering and you see fan leaves blocking budsites, get those fan leaves out of the way! Try pulling or tucking them under the screen. The best part of a SCROG is that it is so hands on. It is really fun making the plant do what you want it to do. After you send it into flower you will want to do one more taming session after the plants "stretch". Expose as many bud sites as you can to direct light by pulling fan leafs under the screen and arrange buds evenly. It took me around an hour and a half to do my final tame. Hope that answers your question Lucifer! |

Yes indeed, work time pay off, I'm quite sure you'll get a nice result.

original setup
Here is a picture of my first attempt. They all started from seeds from good knugs. I took cuttings from #6 as this plant had the best SCROG characteristics.

wa wa waaaaaaa... Well its a new day and the plants are getting a little more bud structure. No other real noticeable changes.
I see that most of my leaves are kinda curling downward. Is this something to deal with nutrient deficiencies?
