Thread: Corkboyhighs first grow,Hydro papaya

Hi all,
having spent the past few weeks researching this forum ive decided to take the plungeand get growing.
Ive decided on a simple homemade ebb and flow system which ive made from 4" pipe for my flowering room and a drip system i bought in b&q for the vegging area.
I will be using 6oow hps lamo for flowering and i have a standard warehouse type flourescent for vegging.
I recently moved into a new house so ive assigned the box bedroom as my growspace, Iv sectioned off about 4.5x3x7 to be my flowering room. Due to financial restrictions i will be building it as i go along. Next on the list is a 600w hps light.
i will be using an inline fan to extract air from the room and have a passive air intake. i dont think ill need carbon filters because i live in the countryside and the exhaust fron the room is out an upstairs window. for air movement inside i will be using oscillating fans.
I bought papaya seeds from a local headshop and 7 out of 10 germd in a paper towel in my airing cupboard. I transferred them to rockwool cubes and they all broke ground within 2-4 days. Iv named them girls names Amy Barbra Ciara Dorothy Eva Fiona Glenda in the order they popped. They are 3-5 days old now and are starting to grow a second set of leaves. Ill get some pics up soon.
i Will be using BioBizz bloom and grow nutes with maxicrop seaweed stuff and formulex for the seedlings. Im just watering them by hand for now cause iv read that overwatering is not good at this stage.
Ok i think thats about it for now, looking forward to some input from you guys along the way and of course for some sweet bud after xmas

Exactly I couldnt have put it better myself.. positive reinforcement! No they're not femmed, I bought a pack of g-force fem seeds before this but I killed them with my impatience! so i bought these on the cheap afterwards lol.

I dont think barbra and ciara are gonna make it, they've gone all curly or something, ill get pics up later, so im down to 5 regular papaya so knowing my luck they'll all be males so I ordered seeds online from attitude seedbank. Afghan kush x yumbolt and they threw in 2 free seeds LA woman and lemon skunk all feminized.
I ordered the 600watter and fan so they should be arriving soon. I think im gonna flower these papaya young and cut clones if they are females, turn this into a perpetual grow

ok the first two are barbra and ciara, any ideas why this happened? i know it doesnt look too bad but compared to the others they're dying

I got my gear today from 3countieshydro, 600w HPS, ph meter and a fan, I dont think the fan will be strong enough tho its a 130m3/h my box is
1x1.5x2m high. Put the exhaust into the attic there doesn't seem to be anything coming thru it, just a noise.

Turns out my PH was all out for the babies, when i checked it was 8.2. I had one of them liquid ph testers and i ph'd the water pretty good, but when i added the nutes it must've shot up. Thats why they werent growing very quick. How long before they get over it and gimme a bit of growth anyone?

Anyways i changed the resevoir and set up the drippers for 20 mins three times a day and i cut the daylight to 18. I had it at 24 to try and make them grow. Im gonna pick up a pair of 3' flourescents next week and try to find a
3x3 ft tray. Any ideas where that could be gotten? In ireland lads?

So nothing more to add really ill post some pics tomorro. Oh yeah for any first timers learn from my mistake ph the water after you add the nutes


Oh yeah i got my all fem seeds so im considering which ones to germ, probly LA woman and one other

I always let my water sit for a while so pH will come down...even after adding nutes...don't really know if this does anything but i haven't had pH problems since..hope that helps clear up any problems

hows tricks man... are you going to use metal halide or hps to veg them seedlings...???

can your 600w take both bulbs?

yep it can take both i think all hps can take mh but not the other way round, im gonna continue with flourescents for my vegging room because theyre cheap to run, and i hope to have a perpetual grow going on so i need the hps. I'll get some pics up of the babies soon

since last post i have established that im an idiot for not presoaking my rockwool cubes. The ph inside the cubes was almost 8. I am trying to rectify this by having a low ph in the resevoir. Plants are showing some signs of micronutrient deficiencies, brown spots on new growth and a whitening of the leaves- iron and calcium deficiencies from having high ph. On the plus side there has been vigorous growth in the last 24 hrs with lots of secondary growth. I have started using advanced hydroponics 3 part nutes, they have chleated minerals which are immediately available to the plants. Im using maxicrop seaweed extract as a growth stimulant

Next time i think ill use the 1" cubes for propogation and put them into net pots with clay pebbles.

Im thinking ill start flowering the papaya at about 28 days. They're all between 18-20 days sprouted and have 4-5 nodes developed so far. My flowering room is ready except for a stronger fan, the fan i bought is piss weak. i thought 100/lh would be enough.

Also i covered the tray im using with plastic loosely fitted to allow airflow. the cubes had gone a bit green. This also reflects some of the light back up to the plants

Put 3 fem seeds into germ today, LA woman, lemon skunk and afghan kush x humbolt. Hopefully ill have a bit of variety after xmas

Thanks smokers, They're like my own child at this stage, fuck it a baby would take less looking after. Im really happy with the progress even with the problems im having. Hopefully i'll be able to iron them out.

After clumsily dropping a 5' flourescent onto the top of their heads and a stressful day wrestling with PH iv decided that ive put them through enough.
So i put em up under HPS. The stalks are a little wonky on a couple but i think theyll be fine. I put them into my cowboy ebb n flow system and flushed em out with ph 4 water. The run off is now around 6 so hopefully i can control it from now on.


I reduced the day to 16 hrs and will reduce it by 2 hrs every second day until its at 12. Im hopin to see a lot of growth in the next few days. I've done some searching and it seems that the papaya get very bushy very quick. They'll be 27 days when 12/12 comes along and theyll do a bit more growing after that. Im hoping to clone a couple once sex has been estd. Is it ok to reveg a clone, like stick it under 18hr lights straight after being cut?

Anyway iv a few beans germing away so theyll have plenty time to veg out before the first batch is done.

Wavens ok but it would be better in square pipes, Its impossible to attach fittings to a curved pipe
