use t5 for cloning, veggin, and if you have no MH, use them for your first 3 weeks of bloom (gets the plants ready for some intense blooming without the major stretching....)......hot tip, get a 1000w HPS! and grow some big bud!
T5 Bulbs each 5000 lumens........ 1000W SHPS 145 000 lumens........... Peace Quote:

I will add my 2 cents about T5s. They rock.
We recently did an experiement where 2/3 of our babies went under 6 T5 42watt bulbs and the other 1/3 went under an HPS. Obviously an MH would have been better but Ive never seen enough of a difference to invest in an MH bulb (even have a ballsat, lazy i guess). The T5 did not have better growth, but neither did the HPS. On the whole, you really could not tell the difference if the plants were right under the light. The big difference is that we never really moved the HPS and we had to move the T5s everyday, sometimes twice a day!!! The other problem was that you cannot stick plants on the outside. You drastically loose lumens with T5s compared to an HID light. So the plants on the outside of the HPS did wonderful, no stretching, but the plants on the outside of T5s did have rather long node spacing. But that is obviously our fault for trying to stuff so many plants under them. I am very convinced they are a GREAT investment for veg. However for flowering I think they are a joke unless you have LSTed the plants like crazy. They cannot penetrate worth a damn. However, if you get nearly the same or the same growth as an HPS, you must also remember that you use less energy and the heat is much more manageable with T5s compared to HID. I will continue to use them on fresh clones and most of veg. |

Still undecided
I've been reading this thread for a while, and can't determine if this is the way to go or not. I've never grown, but have a friend who's going to try to start up their own grow. I understand the electrical arguments, but am considering whether there are other reasons for the quality of growth with less energy. There is an article in the July/August 2006 of 'The Indoor Gardener' about these lights which some might find helpful making a decision.
Once someone attacked Tico for marketing, my friend went back to the HPS, which many people here seemed to swear by. After reading this article, I'm wondering if he made the right choice. I'd post a copy here, but I'm not sure about copyrights. Some of the arguments in this article included reduced heat (which translated to reduced stress) and a better spectrum of light, closer to that of regular sunlight. They demonstrated two grows, one with HPS, and the other with the T5.

Magazine Article
Sorry, I don't have a link - it was in a magazine. The magazine's web site doesn't have articles, just a promotion for subscriptions. It can be found at www.indoorgardenermagazine.com
I picked up a free copy from a local hyrdo store. Given that they charge for subscriptions and back issues, I'm guessing that they would not appreciate my making a copy of this article to post.

Well, we all sure would love to see the article. And I'm certainly not going to subscribe or pay for a back order to read that one article. Therefore, while it sounds exciting, it is really of no use to us if we cant see the article.
Why dont you summarize it and give some of its key points? That would help. Thanks.TGF Edit: I mean, I suppose you hit the big ones in your 2nd to last post about the reduced heat and better spectrum, etc, but it would be nice to see the article with pics.
