Growing in Apartment

I was wondering about the risks and dangers of growing in your apartment. Will the neighbors be able to smell it? But most importantly, in most apartments the manager has the keys to your room and can come in any time or have repairman and stuff come in. And as far as I know, changing the lock would be a bad idea. And this could cause some major problems if your manager comes in to check your smoke alarms and notices smell of plants in your locked closet. You know the really annoying, bitchy, nosy, typical apartment managers.

So does anyone here grow in their apartment and what precautions should I take if I am planning to do this?

Thanks.

I would advise against it. To start. In an apartment if you run any kind of real wattage your gonna have way higher power consumption then your fellow tennants and will be a big bulls eye, if you want a low wattage CFL grow check in the Closet / Cabinet Growing section of this forum and build yourself a stealth cab.

Its *NEVER* a good idea to grow in an apartment.... managers, maintenance folks, pest control, etc pretty much have free reign to come in anytime. Then there is the smell to contend with.... your neighbors are gonna figure out pretty quick what your doing when they can smell it through the walls, and ventilation systems.

Lets just keep it simple... What you do in *YOUR OWN HOME* is your business, what you do anywhere else is subject to scruteny.

don't do it.
I did it two times and I had the worst anxiety I have ever had. I was always worried that the apartment maintnance would come into my apartment. And they did. Luckily I had a friend that worked for the apartment complex and he would let me know in advance if anyone was coming. I felt like i spent most of my time to myself in my room....two days after my harvest we had a shooting in my apartment complex... This was a nice complex where you wouldnt expect something like that to happen... It was over 40 pounds of pot.... they got very suspicious of everyone....i had to dry too quickly and it never got to cure to their full potential...totally not worth it

Lease Agreement

If you read the lease you signed you should see a clause that states if any notice is required before entering and if so how many days it is. Any decent property manager should have a least a 24 hour notice before entering unless upon an emergency. Good luck.

24 hrs?? ROFLMAO.... get real kid, there are so many ways around that, its not funny. You want a partial list??
A/C leaking water in the apartment over the top of you.

<sniff> <sniff> I smell electrical burning.

The power bill spiked from the lights... there must be a short, gotta make sure we are not gonna have the place burn down.

a drain stopped up in the apartment over the top of you... gotta make sure water didn't leak through.

there are a bunch of other excuses they can use.... do you really want to put yourself at risk??

What you do in the privacy of *YOUR* own home(not the landlords), is your business.

Every situation is different. If you live in a place with a nosy manager, forget it. I've done it in rented/leased properties, without any problems, going back to the mid 80's.

Charcoal filter is a must, it'll knock the odor way down. I use ONA gel to deal with anything getting past the charcoal. The ONA is great stuff. I use the fresh linen, the scent is very unobtrusive and it just plain works. If you maintain negative pressure in the grow area and filter the exhaust, odor is not a problem.

Electrical? Hopefully, you have your own meter. I wouldn't do it if electricity was included with the rent. The bump in usage will have the landlord asking Q's. If you rent in an older dwelling, make sure the electrical service is up to the task. Fire is bad.

Grow tents rock! I just started using one this year. If the need should arise, it could easily be completely broken down and packed up in less than an hour.

Always be a good tenant!

In an apartment, it's risky. Minimize the risks by keeping it small, and a grow tent is a GREAT idea, and by being a perfect tenant.

If you are renting a property that you intend to grow in, assess it before signing a lease- do you have access to the electrical panel? Is the wiring heavy enough to take a load? Is there a way to ventilate discreetly? Is the intake for the building furnace anywhere near where your grow would be (fastest way to announce your presence throughout the building...)? Are you willing to buy an 03 generator, and would it be safe to run one in the space? Etc etc etc.

I've rented two places, both freestanding houses.

One flooded when an ice-dam sent the nearby brook THROUGH my house. And the landlord hired a town cop to plow the driveway all winter. I hope he was a better cop than plow guy... I got stuck up there in winter a handful of times and had to explain to my boss why I was at my fishing camp in February...
The other had a nonfunctional furnace (I rented it in summer and didn't check, I'm an idiot) and a well that never gave ample pressure, and ran dry as soon as the fall rains ended.
Be alert to all possible problems, from neighbors to old trees leaning over the house to the bunch of party animals living upstairs...
Good luck.

I don't claim to know the first thing about growing anything; hell, I can't make a Chia pet sprout.
