I would build one, before I'd buy one ... use our 'Search' function, I've seen some 'how-to build' air filters in here, before ... good luck

I spent 100 bucks on a carbon scrubber, I wanted something that would last me so i bought a profession grade filter. However, i can just buy the active carbon off line and change it out when i need to, initially it can be expensive, but long run it will last and u can just buy the carbon to re-fill it when it looses its scrubbing capability. I also didnt feel like building one, although it would have been cheaper.

The fan is going to be the most expensive and i wouldnt bother with trying to get something cheap that just barely works, i got a squirlecage fan 465cfm and it looses probably half of that going through the filter, get an inline fan no matter what! They seem to be the most efficient fans with filters and ducting.

Inline fans can be efficient, but I ordered a 4" Vortex and found it was too loud. I bought a speed controller to reduce the speed and it created a loud hum. I contacted Vortex and they were no help so my new Vortex sits in a box unused. If someone knows of a speed controller that won't cause the loud hum, an inline fan would be a good solution.

I tried the dimmer switch with a fan i have and got the same hum, it just sounds like the motor is working too hard with too little electricity.

Capacitor Driven Speed Controller

I too had this hum issue. I searched online for a while and came a cross a site detailing all the different ways to control a fan, but I can't find it in my history anymore. Basically there are 2 ways to control a fan without noise, one is an autotransformer or (variac) and the other is with a capacitor fan speed controller, like the ones that control a ceiling fan. I got this a Hunter 4 Speed Slide Fan Control and it works great with my Can Fan 6" RO at medium setting. It does take a little bit of work making a box that fits this and an outlet. But it's doable.
