I decided that I am going to do a DWC Hydroponic grow as my first grow ever and am gonna due a one plant thing. Hopedully, I look to yield about over 2 ounces(That isn't too hard if you treat the bush properly right?). My idea is that I want to take a big orange athletic water cooler and tuurn it into a dwc. I could do this two ways.

1- Put water in bottom of jug, mcgyver a plastic top to fit in the middle of the jug. Cut a hole and put in the basket, use clay stones yada yada yada. Then cut out 4 holes in the sides of the jug to make air holes and also easy ascess holes for wiring. Wire a pump and hook up air stones to it and put it in the bottom of the jug. then I would get some kind of light (Have any ideas, small, doesn;t let off too much heat, and will not put to much extra on my electric bill. Well a noticeable amount. This grow has to be stealth due to living conditions).and wire it up and hang the light from the lid of the jug, that way I can adjust it. When I need to add nutes I can just pull the basket with plant out.
Opinions.

2- Preatty much same thing as the last one but put another bucket inside of the jug and use that to grow it in.
Are these good Ideas? What am i missing. Would the smell leak out of these too bad?

for your first time soil is much easier, reliable, harder to fuck up (though not impossible) and has the added benefit of being much cheaper to startup, this leaves money for things like lights and ventilation.
i harvested 2 and 1/2 oz off one plant in organic soil.
and if i understand you...you wanna use the water cooler for the dwc AND as the grow space?
i dont think it'll be big enough....

Containing one plant inside a big orange water cooler will not be possible, or your plant would have to be so small that it would not be worth growing. Usually, the roots hang down into the bucket from the lid, and the roots grow in that space. If you run out of root space, your plant suffers severely.

I'm a DWC n00b myself but I know that you can't put the plant down inside the water cooler; it will have to grow out of the lid. If you have to be stealthy about it (ie. enclosing the plant in a really small space), then I would say it wouldn't be worth trying to grow anything. Not to crush your hopes, but the 12 weeks going into one plant and yielding a few grams just isn't worth the time and effort its going to take.

Why is it that it has to be so stealth? You aren't trying to grow in your parents house or without your roommates' consent are you? Realize that should you ever be busted, everyone in the house will be charged! Grow smart!

If I were to grow cannabis, I would only do so to supply myself and my close friends. Doing this would take myself and my friends out of harms way by knowing the source of our cannabis, as well as take hundreds of thousands of dollars off the black market annually. It would also lower the demand of black market cannabis, and would ultimately help keep cannabis out of the hands of minors.

i think i decided that If I am going to grow anything, except I wouldn't because it is illegal in the u.s. i would get 4 jiffy pellets. plant 4 lowrider strains in their and put them in a rubermaid box that I build. I found someone who told me how to do nutes right for that specific strain and that sounds good. If they are 4 small (18-22 inches) plants, how bad would they smell? Like, would I HAVE to make a Carbon filter? Any things I need to know about Lowriders? Any tips on how short the grow could possibly be?
