i have indeed thought of it...

I read about a guy who's using some of the really big CFLs - have you thought of that for your grow?

i'm using smaller CFL's (mostly 40 watters) partly because they're so much easier to find, they're way cheaper than the big ones and, maybe more importantly, the smaller bulbs allow much more flexibility when it comes to tweaking your light spectrums.
for example, a 200 watt, 6500Kelvin bulb will never be anything but 200 watts of 6500K light. on the other hand, 5 x 40 watt bulbs can be split between spectrums so you can add some reds as well.
anyway, that's my reasoning, whether it makes an appreciable difference in yield remains to be seen. lol

so, toke amongst your selves

That's a really good point. I'll have to remember to point that out to him the next time he's bragging about how big and bright his lights are.

You say you use 40w CFLs - I'm assuming you mean 40w actual, with a 100+ equivalency? A 26-27w CFL is supposed to be a 100w equivalent, so I'd guess a 40w would be about 150w equivalent?

Has anyone done any kind of comparison between the lumen output of, say, 5 100w equivalent CFLs versus one 500w equivalent? Does one option make more heat than the other?

I'm tempted to try a little side-by-side but there's no point in reinventing the wheel if someone else already has. (Or spending a bunch of money on it.)

that's all bullshit, look at the actuall wattages when you buy, and some bulbs don't specify the spectrums, if you can't tell, leave them in the store.

and yeah, the 40's are equal to 150's, really though, forget that bullshit, it's just marketing hype.

another thing for you to consider is that, in truth, CFL's will produce more heat than an HID, watt for watt, the difference is that with HID's, all the heat comes from one source only, with CFL's there are many sources so the heat is spread out more.

what would be cool to test is a comparison between 10x40watt CFL's against 1x400watt HPS. the results of that test would really have some value.

anyway, toke amongst yourselves

my clones are rooted, now what?...

so far, my new bubble cloner has worked like a dream. in my first run i got 17 rooted clones out of 18 cuttings, yipee! LOL (and all starting showing roots within 8 days!)

anyway, now i have to transplant my rooted cuttings and i thought i'd take some pics to document and post for the other newbies.
first i potted some in dirt for a friend which is pretty simple, just be gentle.

so, bake on (after you pot your clones)

and a few more...

like i said, potting into dirt is pretty simple, just be gentle and remember not to leave too much space between the level of the dirt and the rim of your pots, you don't want a lot of dead, stagnant air pooling around the base of your plants.

the pots are from my first grow (2 liter coke bottles, not big enough for mommas but fine for clones that only resided in them for 10 weeks and 15 of them fit into one of my underbed bins {post #1, pic #2})

thanks Image Reaper and Weedhound...

now for the hydro growers, something i learned from StinkyAttic, all props to her!

LOL, if i don't get this right, it's me, not what Stinky taught

anyway, if your growing in hydroton, hygromite or river rock, you need to be extra gentle with your roots so put your medium into a tub filled with ph balanced solution (just 4ml ThriveAliveB1 red and a drop of SuperThrive for a gallon of water)(the hydroton in particular needs to be pre-cleaned and pre-soaked before use)

now, put your net pots into the solution, add some medium and then add your roots.
now, gently back-fill into your pot.
pretty simple really

and now for the bake

Hey bozo,

Looking great!
You dropped by my grow a couple weeks ago i think when i'd just taken some cuttings and told me about you're cloner. I took a quick look then but now i'm gonna try and build one myself and have re-read your thread. I'm gonna go looking for supplies this afternoon.

Everything seems pretty straight forward and you've explained everything well but i've just got one question. What level do you have your resevoir filled to? I was thinking an inch or two lower than the bottom of the cutting so that the bubbles mist the stem, is that right?
Oh and another thing, I have much better success when i put my clones in a humidity dome, (the old way just in rooting cubes in a propagator) do you think I should try to build my cloner with one or isn't it needed as they get a constant misting effect to the roots? I've not seen a dome on yours so i assume you dont bother with one. But did you use a dome before and decide you didnt need one on the bubble cloner?

Thanks

Good luck, can't wait to see them flowering

if there's a Lowes near you the bins i use are black and they're called 'Stor-It-All Pro', there are several sizes, my cloner is the smallest one they make.

you got it, the solution has to be high enough so the stems get splashed (constantly, lol)
(i use approx 3ml of ThriveAlive B1 Red and 1 drop of Superthrive per gallon, the bin holds 2 gallons)

i do have a dome but haven't had to use it for the new cloner, my cuttings started showing roots in just a few days and by 8 or 9 days, 17 of 18 had roots (i believe i transplanted after 12 days)

the last 3 are right but the first couple don't belong so here are the right ones

so, look at these, then go to post #83, disregarding the first 2 pics (obviously dirt)

I've made a bubble cloner too, cheers bozo!

Hey bozo,

I'm in the uk and don't have a lowes around, I found a box just the right size but when I got it home discovered it leaked lol but only after i'd spent about an hour cutting holes out of the lid (jeez that plastic was thick) It's ok tho I went back and found a better one that cost about $9. (the lid was much thinner and easier to cut ) Got my pump for $12, line and airstone for $4, net pots $1 for a grand total of $26, not bad eh!

Decided to use net pots and clay pebbles rather than drop the root directly in the res, although I plan to get another lid and try it the other way too, i'm sure it will be better as the stem will be getting sprayed directly, I was just in a bit of a rush to get this done before I go away and I was already going to the hydro shop so got the pots while I was there.

I asked the guy at the hydro store about superthrive but they don't stock it, he recommended some stuff called "FORMULEX" so I hope that does the job.

Yeah that makes sense that you haven't needed the dome as they root so fast, i'll see how they get on i'm sure i can find something suitable pretty quickly should they need a dome.

Thanks for your advice and showing me how easy it is to make your own bubble cloner

Oh and I plan to put a skirt around the side of it so roots are not exposed to any light.

Here's a couple of pics!

good for you man!

and a quick and easy skirt might be to just spray paint the outside of the bin. (get the kind for model cars, i think it will hold better as it's made to paint plastic)

on another note, i tried rooting clones in net pots with hydroton around the stems and all i got was dead cuttings, i think you will have much better success if you just dangle the stems above the solution so they get splashed constantly by bubbles.

here's a couple of pics of something you can do to make it work
i had more cuttings than would fit into the cloner so i had to improvise, using 2 of my DWC's as cloners, except that the holes were too big. what i did was to cut out the bottoms of some plastic cups, then i got a pool noodle and sliced off some 1 inch thick pieces to use as inserts, the noodle already had a hole running through it so all i had to do was slice it to allow for easy removal of the rooted cutting

Yeah I thought it would be better to have the stems dangling but figured it would still be ok in hydroton, thanks for the heads up bozo, I'll have to have a think, maybe if I just put a top with a small hole on the net pots it will work till i've some time to sort it properly or a bit of styrofoam ( i think thats what its called, the white stuff they use for packing), yeah i'm sure i can get that to work, thanks again bozo.

and you can get it in sheets at a home center or a lumber yard or a builders supply. you might even be able to just get some styrofoam or plastic cups that fit in the holes you made in your top, then just cut the bottoms out.

anyway, good luck, and you're very welcome

and thanks for stopping by Opie

Hydroponic Cabbage is on a distinguished road
Just read your thread, and I must say nice looking setup. I love your cloner; I was gonna try clonning this time around but I'm about to move soon after harvest and didn't want to try to transport plants. But I'm gonna start right back and I see your cloner comming in very handy. Keep up the good work

lol, yes and no.

like you, i suffered some set-backs at home which necessitated my chopping most of my babies. my daughter and i haven't been getting along and she found out about my grow and made some threats.

so, rather than risk her doing something out of youthful angst and stupidity, i convinced her i had chopped it all down. (20 years from now i don't want her feeling guilty for ratting her dad out, this way, she can't, and i've since sent her to stay with my son's God-parents for the summer.

what i had at the time was some rooted cuttings, my plants and 6 extra cuttings i'd potted up into dirt that i intended for a friend.

when i decided to chop, i potted the rooted cuttings into a DWC bin and put them into another location along with those i had in dirt
then i chopped the plants, taking multiple cuttings from each (it left me with 6 donor plants)

since then, i flipped the six in dirt (there were 3 of my donors and 1 unlabeled) and found 2 fems, lol, unfortunately, one of them was the un-labeled one so i have one new momma, with 6 cuttings rooting and almost ready to enter the flowering phase, plus, i put cuttings from 2 of the remaining 3 donors in dirt and under 12\12 yesterday, hopefully, i get one more fem (from the other strain)
(actually, i'm pretty certain i will 'cause the un-labeled fem is definately different from the other one)

anyway, i'm hoping the state doesn't decide to take my economic stimulus check like they did my drivers license (for non payment of child support even though the kids have been in my custody for 6 years now) so i can get a new camera and some good seeds.

if not, then, on the first of the month i'm gonna start my flowering log anyway, by then i'll have enough confirmed fems to start production of my SOG, hopefully, i have a workable plan to carry into the future.

LOL, wish me luck dude!

It's not so fun playing executioner to your green children when their secrecy is at stake! Glad you were able to smuggle some of them away from the chopping block. At least they weren't super strains... oh yeah, did you ever narrow your choices down to what you want to order?
I constantly obsess over the ones I want to order and grow... Blueberry and Sensi Star

thanks man, and don't be intimidated.
while i agree there's a shitload to learn, you don't have to wait until you're an expert to get started.

you're luckier than many, myself included, in that you have that haze plant to work with.
