Stinky: Weird dream. Need reality...
Ok...I know this is going to sound weird. Especially since I have never grown using hydro, but...
I had a weird dream a couple of nights ago, and my curiosity has peaked. In the dream I was having a problem with my reservoir, with nutes precipitating out of the water column, settling and making a reddish film on the bottom, throwing off all the ppm measurements and the plants ability to uptake the nutes. The more I added oxygen to aggitate the water, (air stone) the worse the settling of nutes and minerals got. -Then- For some weird reason, my dream cut to a friend in the coral reefing craze telling me when I first started-out, that we don't use air stones or bubblers in saltwater tanks, as the pumps inside the tank are aimed twords the surface to create enough of a ripple in surface tension to oxygenate the tank and it's inhabitants. 'Extra' oxygen in saltwater tanks beads into little air bubbles that stick to every surface and quickly promotes cyanobacteria (an invasive reddish or reddish-brown bacteria) and precipitates metals and minerals into the sandbed. -Then- (back in the growroom) I removed the air stone, changed solution, and added a water pump to keep the solurion mixed and oxygenated. -Then- I woke up, never to see the results. (frustrating, huh?) Normally, I don't remember my dreams, but this was...creepy-realistic. I'm really not looking for advise about growing hydro...but it did get me to wondering about the 'science' of the dream comparing the hydro solution precipitate, and the saltwater 'passive' oxygenation technique. Any imput? (beyond "get more sleep" lol)

Geez I saw that thread title and was like, Oh noes! lolWell, the bacteria you speak of probably aren't going to survive in a hydro environment, between the different chemical makeup of the res water and teh beneficials that a lot of us are using (haha yay 'good bugs')... but precipitates in hydro ARE common if you're using cheap or incompatible nutes, nutes intended for soil, or have really hard tap water, or are using the wrong shit for pH up/down (pool chems = baaaaaad!!!!!). Oxygenating the res is important especially if you run beneficials in it to control fungus and bacteria. The pump instead of airstone works fine in NFT and ebb n flow settings, but in DWC you still need a super duper airstone. Now, get some more damn sleep already!

Well, there ya go- if your res is running under correct conditions (5.8-6.0 with beneficials added is what I'd go for personally), you should not have a problem.
The darkside isn't so bad. You might like it here.

Thanks for the replies all, but seriously...it was a dream. There's no way, in this desert heat, that I could pull-off a hydro grow. (and am too broke to purchase all that equipment)
The question I guess I really had, was, could the 'surface tension release' of disolved oxygen happen without the air stone providing too much of the 'dissolved' oxygen into the water column, which in turn can create unfavorable conditions, which need to be corrected using more chemicals, yet still provide adequate oxygen to the ladies? (could you use a water pump instead to avoid precipitate build-up?) <takes breath> Was just curious. Yeah, I guess the saltwater additives (iodine, calcium, strontium & molybdenum, ammonia removers...) differ greatly from the nitrogen, iron, and other shit we use for cannabis. Hadn't dreamt of that, tho, lol. Gotta say, was the most realistic dream I've had since the nightmare about Carter being elected. Freaky, especially since I don't fully understand all the principles involved on the cannabis end of tank oxygenation, lol. (altho I do somewhat understand the chemistry involved with the saltwater tanks) Great...I get one Profound Relevation a year, and I wasted it on this, lol. Thanks again.
