Two plants to a 5 gallon hydro bucket?

Ok, I know it is bad to put to plant in the same pot with soil, but is the same true with hydro?

I've seen grows with more then one plant to a tub without any barriers between the plants to prevent root tangling. So I was wondering if I could do the same with a bucket. If not I will either kill of two of the plants or add in two more buckets to the system.

Originally, two of the plants were just test plants. After everything got to the way I wanted it I put the two larger plants into the buckets. I left the smaller ones just to make sure everything remained well because they would probably show signs of stress faster. Now they have become very healthy and I would kind of like to keep them around if possible and in the most suitable manner possible.

    Thanks!

Yes you can put 2 or 3 in a 5 gallon bucket. I had 10 gallon tubs with about 6 gallons of water and put 6 plants in them. No problems. The roots do tangle but no harm unless you want to separate them and why would you. Go for it.

    Bad Bad Bad ,
1st cardinal rule w/ growing . Unless your using female seeds / or clones . = 1 plant per container - soil or hydro . He goes n kills the males = he also eventually will kill the females too due to the dead roots from the males still in the system .

The seed are feminized, but who knows if one may go hermie. I think I'll set up two more buckets just in case.

i have to agree with X-C here......seems like very tempting the fates to mix a bunch of plants in one container.......not the least of which would be the ending yeild would be less of course......assuming nobody had problems and actually finished and didn't get rootbound, or rootrot or turn out to be a male or........

my DWC fits 4 potential plants it it but I use only 2 of the slots because as you can see in my log, they are out of control in size

inside the DWC, it is not divided and I have no idea if they are tangled, probably are, but I don't see it making a problem as long as the roots are getting the nutrients they need

While waiting on mothers to clone I did grow 6 in a container 2 were males and I took out as much root as posible from the males. With no problems.

Yes dead roots in your res are very bad but not the end of the world. Look up my thread locnar1958 How's my girl's. About 10 days into flower Zandor had me cut roots on one of six back to just the water line. I got all the cut roots I could out but had no ill effect of rot.

If you have the room, yes buckets I think would be best but in a small space we have to make dew.

I hear ebb and flow peeps talking about how hard it is to keep clean cause roots tangle and you can't just pull them out to clean algea.

Most all of mine have been fem or clones so no worries most of the time.

I don't mean to slame anyone it just happens alot of peeps have more than one per container.

I like to keep it 1 plant per bucket. it's definitely easier for me.

I know a few guys who have done 2 per bucket (they were female clones so no pollen worries) and they made it fine to harvest. Although the 2 plant buckets ended up yielding about the same as a 1 plant bucket due to competition for space and nutes. so...i say it isn't worth it. but it can be done.

Based on my own experience I have to respectfully disagree with this statement, at least as it applies to DWC hydro systems.

As long as the reservoir is big enough, you should be able to remove any males or unwanted plants fairly easily as long as you do it before the roots become too tangled (the amount of time depends on the size of the res). The trick is to actually lift the entire plant, roots and all out of the system. Use your fingers to comb through the root mass and help untangle it from the other plant(s). If you look at my current grow log, you'll see the six plant, single res system I use. I've removed plants from it on every single grow I've done - a couple of times after the plants were pretty good sized. If you look at this picture you can see how big they were last grow, and I removed three plants without any problems at all.

That said, the general rule of thumb for a DWC seems to be 3 gallons per plant. Putting two plants in a single 5 gallon bucket might be a bad idea, unless you're going to flower really early to keep the plants small. If you're growing from seed, that wouldn't be possible since it can take a couple of weeks of 12/12 for them to show sex. In that time they would probably have grown to large to safely separate.

I wonder who your talking about? I have lots of experience from trying 1 to 4 in a 5 gallon dwc, 2 is doable 1 is better My yields are higher with 1 plant per bucket not by much though. Its just easier to maintain a single plant per bucket over all.

There's exceptions to every rule .

Skeet brought up my biggest objection of all = competition of space .

Clones usually grow at the same rate / share the same charecteristics and there's less competition , but I was brought up to run 1 per. bucket .

We tried multiplant systems / ideas in the DWC club thread . Ppl. tried segregation - pantyhose , screening , you name it and they grew together .

    To each they're own .

I realize that they do compete for space and you get about the same amount. Just after the first of the year my time is up and I will try buckets with one each. I think I can get 6 in a 4x4 room maybe only 4. Back in the day Zandor showed me one of his that yielded 5 pounds from a 5 gallon bucket. That's what I want. Peace guy's.

I am about to start 6 in a 10 gallon rubbermaid container, should i try to use some mesh or screen to separate the roots?

if they are clones or feminized seeds and you don't intend on ever taking the plants out then yes, by all means go for it. if you read the threat you'll see that if they are not clones or fem seeds then you will run into difficulties. i run 8 per 10 gallon bucket myself.

if they're clones or fems and u don't ever intend on taking them out then you also don't need to worry about the screen divider. use a screen if you intend on plucking some out at a later date, it should fix the problem.
