Thread: Got a few ppm questions. Can anyone help?

1. Does anyone know of a link or the stats them selves for what concentration (ppm) of nutes that are best for plants at different ages or heights?

2. When you are trying to get the concentration of nuts in the res. to a certain level (say 400ppm), do you want the water to be at 400pmm of total particles or 400ppm of nutrient particles then whatever the epsom salts will add and what the water started at to begin?

most good nutrient companies such as General Hydroponics, or Ionic, provide the whole how much and when chart. It's called a feed chart and it gives the best advice for that particular line of nutrients, and how much to use at every stage.

here's a feed chart for the Flora series. It tells exactly what to add.

That chart is cool, but i can't find one for the dyna grow and bloom. Also, anyone know if you just add the specified pmm levels to the existing ppm? (thats what i did) or do you want total levels of all particles combined at that level listed?

Good Question, I hope someone answers it. I use Dyna Grow also and I just received my ppm meter. My tap water that I'm using is 260ppm. I put in the nutes and my ppm was only 375. I wonder if that means I should add. According to the label I put the correct amount of nutes in though. Plants are 5 weeks old.

The listed suggested ppm levels on your bottle of Dyna Grow is assuming that your water is at 0 ppm to begin with. if you start off at 260 ppm with your tap water and the Dyna Grow says to use 400 ppm, then you must add 400 ppm of your nutrients so your level would be 660.

I would suggest you try to use distilled water, or reverse osmosis water which will have 0 ppm. Your 260 ppm tap water is probably ok, but may contain chlorine or calcium, or sodium or something else harmful to your plants. If you must use tap water, they sell hydroponic nutrients that are meant to be used with tap water and ppm levels around that 260. Flora series by General Hydroponics sells a "hard water" version of their 3-part nutrient line which is meant for tap water.

give it a shot with your dyna grow, just keep close watch on your pH level, keep it around 5.8, change your reservoir every 7-10 days topping with fresh water every day. Good luck!!!!!!!!

Thanks, Dyna Grow doesn't list anywhere how many ppms it should be though. It just lists how many teaspoons per gallon.

Wow, I have been keeping my ph at about 6.8 in my bubbler and drip system. Is that too high? They have been growing great at this ph... I figured it was really close to neutral so that was good. Should I lower it??

Hydroponics Ph is 5.2- 5.8 but up to 6 is fine too. There is a chart in the FAQ that shows absorption rates of the nutrients at different Ph levels.

Don't forget to check you water's ppm before putting any nutrients in your plants. Whatever series you use, just go light and build up as you recognize it's tollerance. Small rather than large amounts are what the plant responds to safely.

I know what ppm is but the equipment i bought is an EC tester......according to the manufacturer of the NFT system i bought, my EC during veg has to be at 1.4mS and at flowering 2.0mS......are these values good?

shouldn't add nutrient ppm to resevoiir that was measured at earlierier time as resevoir level gets lower. Just add Ph corrected water until you change the water in the resevoir , which should be changed every 10 to 14 days.

Here's my recomendation: If the Dyna grow nutes you have give directions in teaspoons or whatever and not by PPM, then just follow those guidelines and top your resevoir when needed with plain water. Keep abreast of your pH level especially when using organic supplements. I think pH 5.8 is a perfect all around level although a light fluctuation between 5.4 and 6.2 is fine too. Dump and renew your resevoir at seven or eight days. Run an airstone or two in your resevoir to keep it fresher. I'm finding my plants don't require added nutrients at every topping of the resevoir. I just use plain (reverse osmosis) water. Don't forget that if you have a small resevoir, like 5 or 10 gallons, you can have a service drop off 5 gallon containers every so often, like Culligan or somebody. Culligan's water jugs are all reverse osmosis treated water. The ppm is like 002 and pH is always the same.

you grew those plants hydro.. in 260 ppm tap water?

WOW.. that is amazing and maybe you got lucky as SHIT!!! Most Hydro and Aero systemd with 200+ ppm water will stunt plant growth beyng 14 days from germination and then slowly kill the plant.

From your picture, it looks like your ppm is to low... it could just be the picture.. but leaves should be GREEN.. capital G.. : ).. other than that your SHIT looks TIGHT!!!!!

no I do not use tap water. I use reverse osmosis water. The leaves appear a bit light in color from the quality of the picture only. They are much greener than they look in the picture. I follow General Hydroponics phase feeding program with floranova nutes, and all the supplements they recomend including Hygrozyme, and soon Silica Blast. I want to introduce a silica supplement to the mix because it claims to be beneficial to hotter grow enviroments, and silica is abundantly present in soil, and supposedly it will maintain a healthy resevoir.
