You don't have to already use the Flora series or other Advanced base nuts. for one to have an effect on a plant or system (if that's what you were saying). You can use GH, Organic or and combination of base nutrients and still benefit from the use of one AdvNut product. I'm sorry I usually agree with you but not on this because I know people who have used piranha and voodoo juice just as a reservoir treatment without using other AdvNut products. It promotes healthy roots and the organisms will breakdown the rotten roots. I agree there are other options and the more information listed the better the response but it wouldn't hurt. Stoner Thought here: Maybe you were talking about the toxicity level in his reservoir; maybe that cannot support life even at the microbial level if the PPM is too high. ANYWAYS I'M HUNGRY!

I think we really need a pic on this one. I will take pic's of mine if need be. My first grow was nothing but dynagrow and roots were white. Next 2 grows were GH 3 part and Lucas formula this time, B-52, Cal-mag plus. My roots are the color of my res. Kind of browny red. They also look like they are dragging down some of the rockwool cube they strated in. We need the whole story. Mine are doing very well.

Unless your water temperature drops below 60F, you don't need a heater. Roots are healthier in cool water and can hold more oxygen. Warmer temperatures actually promote root problems.
Sometimes additives stain the roots brown even when the roots are healthy. Unless they are brown, decaying and slimey I wouldn't worry. When I have had root rot before, it smelled bad. |

cyberbud:
hard 2 say. This was my first run, nutes in res are brown like medium-dark tea. Plant roots got brown a couple months ago (I also couldn't tell for sure if from nutes or rot). The plants are still green and healthy, but resin production for the strains isn't nearly what it should be so I know the roots aren't as good as they should be........ but whatever it is hasn't killed them and it's been a lonnnng time. I've read that once infected, the root rot just progresses, eventually kills the plant. So probably my brown wasn't (all?) root rot. I think the roots can be pretty unhealthy and still not be infected with Pythium (especially if you're running peroxide or microorganisms to keep it away). If your nutes are brown it's pretty much useless to judge by the color. The best way I've found to tell the health of the roots is the smell. At the beginning, when my roots were the healthiest (and also white, before the staining), they had a sharp, slightly acrid, fresh-root smell. It's very similar to if you pull a carrot out of the ground and smell it (if it's grown in uncompacted soil), a bit bitter even. Once you know that smell it's unmistakeable, and that's the best way to tell. When they start to get funky, they get a smell that's more like the carrot after it's cooked -- no sharp fresh smell anymore. As time went on, only a certain percentage of mine kept the good smell, but the color on all was pretty similar. Be nice to find some nutes that are clear...........................I've never tried GH. Last edited by grow4fun; Feb-02-2006 at 21:44. |

Hey Cyber,
Brown slimy roots are a serious serious problem.. love You need to clean out all the dead matter (all of it). Use a fish net and get BUSY!!! Dead matter uses up valuable oxygen... this is s serious matter , cause not only are your roots dying but the dead matter is making problems worse!!! love Cyber rotting roots are very hard to recover from..!!! You will need to start a hydrogen peroxide regiment ASAP.. You need to add air stones!!!!!!!!! YOu need to get OXYGEN in.. DEAD matter OUT!!! love.... to be continued... |
