Cubloc PLC Controlled Growroom

I was looking on the net for information on how these guys control their Christmas lights with a computer to go with music. There's all kinds of funky PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) one can build with instructions and bags of parts and mega weed to get you through it all.

BUT, I found this one controller that may not be exactly perfect for running Christmas lights to music, but it is perfect for growing shrub.

Here is the video of the guy making a Christmas light controller out of a Cubloc CUSB-22R Zedomax DIY119 - Make Christmas Light controller in 5 minutes! | zedomax.com - The DIY, HOW TO, Hacks, Gadgets, and Tech Blog/Search Engine! If this guy can do it, I KNOW I can do it. :P

Now, I wouldn't have my HID flashing like that, but you can program this thing to do pretty much whatever you want.

Here's some info on the controller he's using:
Programmable - Via serial cable
Name - Cubloc CUSB-22R
Input - 11 inputs for sensors
Outputs - 10 x 5A @ 250v relays for devices

But there is a cheaper version with only 6 relays for 99 bucks. The CUSB-30R Comfile Technology Inc. This version comes with 6A relays.

This thing is made for industrial applications, so I'm sure they also have higher amp relay kits. But if my calculations are right, you should be able to run a 400 or 600 W HID @ 120 volts without over amping the relay.

1000 watts at 120 volts needs 8.3 amps of current, but 1000 watts at 240 volts needs only 4.1 amps of current.... So, if you're running a 240 volt lighting system, you could easily control 1000w lamps with this thing. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong)

But, this thing can be used for a lot more than just lights. You can build a total computer controlled grow room with LCD touch screen display and make the whole thing internet ready using parts readily available from the same company. Visit this link to see some cool parts you can use to build your PLC grow room. Comfile Technology Inc.

I think what you need to start the project is a starter student board kit and a cheap relay board. The starter kit comes with the software and proto board and cables and stuff to get started.

Student kit - $99 - Comfile Technology Inc.
4 Relay Board - $15.00 - Comfile Technology Inc.

I'll also be looking for sensors to use for this system. Co2, PH, O2, light...etc.

So, if anyone else is interested in this stuff and finds sensors or parts (servos, electric operated valves, etc) that would work with this, please let us know!

I'm going to order the student kit and a relay board next time I get paid, and will be doing a bit more research until then.

Cheers!

Personally I would use the outputs to control contractors that can easily be repaired, thats how I do it in my industrial maintenance work.
