Scandic Novice
I was fortunate, at my earlier years, to be surrounded by fellow tokers. I took pride in my ability to spot the "closet smokers" and when in doubt, Iran to the closest hood and picked up a cheap sac. (I do have a lifetime ghetto pass) Well, that is no longer a luxury here in Sweden!
I'm a pot head and it's been four months since my last high! Cry with me. I decided to grow my own. After numerous arguments turned to conversations and now jokes with my wife, she agrees that as long as it grows naturally, then i may consume it; she's even agree to take a hit or two.
She has given up her shoes and purses closet ( I know!) for my green thumb's delight! The space measures approximately 5'Lx5'Wx10'H and I'm have a few worries as I try to turn the space into my sanctuary.
I'm primarily concerned with the ventilation, but I have read that a handful of plants will not create a harmful environment which would require in/out flow of air. True or false?
Secondly, power usage spike? How do I feel safe running lights for such extended hours?
Another thought is the lighting. How do I get the room ready with only on ceiling light and no outlets?
I'll post pictures and possibly video of the cleared space once i get a new wardrobe for my wife's shoes and purses. I am looking for a sponsor, locally is available. Someone that will help from germination to consumption.
I look forward to a bountiful fall and long winter

welcome to can.com man, and say hi to your lady, anyone willing to give up her closet for her man is ok by me, lol
anyway, to try and asnwer some of your questions
first, that's a great sized space but to really benefit, you have to divide it up into 2 spaces (one for flowering and one for the mommas and clones)
the easiest way to do that is with Panda plastic sheeting like this
you can get it in sheets if you don't want to get a whole role, just not at this web site.
and you are right to be concerned about ventilation, without it, your plants won't live.
what you need to do is spend some time here deciding what fits your circumstances
as far as lights go, CFL's (ESL's?) work well, are cheap to buy and run, and, if after a while you decide growing isn't for you, you can use them around the house.
if you take a walk through my imaginary garden, i talk about my lights and you might find other info of interest.
anyway, good luck and God bless man

Give your wife a big hug; as a chick who NEEDS my show -n- purse storage... that's a sacrifice!
Don't start out trying to grow a sativa indoors. Stick with classic Skunk, Northern Lights, and Afghani type plants when you are learning. Hazes and other sativas grow SLOWLY, finish LATE, and the slowness can lead to problems indoors.
You need a LOT of ventilation.
Power spikes aren't the worst thing in the world; I assume you won't be running more than a 1000wHPS to start, and on top of an existing household E bill, that is not a huge spike. Just be careful not to double your electric consumption. Even going from your current usage to 160% of your current usage is a little steep. Plan to change all your light fixtures to energy saver ones, and cut down on your household appliance usage. If you have an electric stove/oven, consider more efficient ways of cooking with it, such as steaming veggies in a basket OVER the pasta that is boiling... stuff liek that.
And read the link in my siggy for more startup info.

Thank you for the reply. I read your "n00b" guide more than once. You are the reason I decided to post here as opposed to all the other sites. (enough encouragement from me I'm in the finance field,so numbers work very well for me. I'm still working on clearing out the room and then I have to paint it. I hope i can tap your knowledge if the need should arise. I'm a fellow New Englander; I feel that you may understand that quality is always better than quantity.

your welcome and thank you.
if i understand your question you must mean in the cloner.
what that is is a piece of pipe wrap insulation cut to 1 inch and then just wrapped around the stem of a cutting and then wedged into the top of my cloner.
here is a picture to illustrate, on the right is the cloner with the pipe wrapped clones, on the left is a DWC i was using as a cloner for some cuttings that i had no room for in the cloner, they're the ones in the orange cups, in that same DWC there are 2 cuttings that had already rooted and were transplanted into DIY net pots filled with hydroton.
LOL, shit, that's what you mean, those little balls are expanded clay pellets which are called hydroton, they provide a substrate for the roots to hang onto as well as retaining moisture and oxy.
LOL, what a maroon i am, anyway, you need to be very careful, growing herb is even more addictive than smoking it, lol
