so during my art class in school we were assigned to make an animal out of clay. i decided to make a giraffe and somehow try to make it into a bong of some sort. well i tell my instructor about what im goin to make and she comes up with a wonderful idea. she tells me to make an udu drum. so my made my own version of this "udu drum" and it came out unbelievable. its funny because my instructor knows all about it being a bong. Everytime i pick the thing up to work on it she goes"remember, if anybody asks you its an udu drum" then she kids around spelling it out for me lol. so i am goin to put the final coat of glaze on the outside and inside and came to a dilemma. Some girl came to me saying that i wont be able to smoke out of it because the glaze that im applying has lead and other chemicals. well thats wen i went over to the bottle og glaze and pointed out the big letters "LEAD FREE AND NONTOXIC". i am still curious if it is still safe to smoke out of and figured this would be the right place to ask, btw i made the bong into a female cyclops. the hole is on top of the head and i made a slid hole that is a "bellybutton/venthole" cough cough. there are two stubby arms coming off of it. one is opened up so it is going to act like a giant rush hole. i named her BIG BERTHA lol. ill post pics as soon as i get it back

another question is if i dont glaze the inside of the bong, will the water i pour in it be absorbed by the dry clay? i mean i poured paint in it and it absorbed it pretty dam quick lol

Wow. My friend did the exact same thing. Its a dragon and named puff. He glazed all of it and the inside. I've smoked out of it but was always alittle iffy about using it. It works though but I'd rather use the real thing.

I would not glaze the inside i think it might taste wierd. also did you poor the paint inside after it was put in the oven or after just like a day of drying? i use to take pottery back in the day and ill make cups, bowls, and plates for the family to use during meals. worked like a charm

im 18 turning 19 this may and im a senior in hs. to tell you the truth i dont remember when i poured the paint in but i know that i did and it absorbed that shit rlly quick. so if i dont glaze the inside would all the water get absorbed by the unglazed dry clay on the inside?

why don't you ask your teacher, since A) she's a ceramics teacher and knows what can be used safely. (for like plates and mugs.) and B) she's cool with you making a bong.

i would glaze the inside, im sure youll be fine if you use the lead free non-toxic glaze, as it is used for cups, plates and other dishes that people eat/drink out of so i dont see how smoking could hurt you

Don't take my word for it, but I'm pretty sure ceramic glaze is basically glass.. Smoke is just going to roll right over it.

glaze has alot of minerals and metals in it, thats how they make different colors. there might be some that are non toxic and even a different makeup now. and yes ceramic bongs that are sold are not glazed inside but they do soak up some water and get a funky resin smell after using. i had an art teacher who was really cool, i once made a bead(smokestone) that she certainly asked me about.(too easy for a real art project) but it blew up in the kiln so i never got to use it. i dont really know if it is bad to use glaze inside (or cheaper) but the produced ones dont have it inside.

I took Ceramic's for 4 years, every year I tryed to make a bong, or a pipe, she allwauys seen them and ditched em'

The bowl is the only part that matters
Get a glass bowl and it wont matter

People smoke out of PLASTIC bongs with glass or metal bowls and are fine

I just recently did the same thing
but I made a "vase"

Just drilled the hole in it today and put the slide in
Now I just need some weed
