While i was writing "that same hot day" i was disturbed by a knockin on my door, followed by angry shouts.
My fingers froze in mid air, hovering just above a keyboard that (just minutes ago) was clicking away at blazing speeds, catching the thoughts as they fell from my eyeballs. More knocks, louder this time, they wern't going away. I quickly signed off from the story, shut down my computer, and stashed everything in a hidden compartment even I sometimes have trouble finding. I ran downstairs and looked out the window, no car in the driveway, but that fuckin banging is still threatening to brake the door off its hinges. So i walk over, slowly, and swing the door open to reveal....nothing. Some sort of twisted joke? If so, a really horrible one. Knocking on someones door then running away when they answere? How fuckin original is that? I dismissed the whole event for a lame prank and turned to go back inside, but on the opposite side of the road something caught my eye. A white Impala with a spotlight mounted next to the driver side mirror (sound familier?) was parked almost directly across the street from my house. I knew it was an undercover. He was a friend of mines cousin, and spent most of his time driving back and forth along the same road, doing aboslutely jack shit. His attempted discreet stakeout was not going well. Mostly due to the fact there is nothing across the street from my house. Just an old road with woods on one side and a couple of houses on the other. I stood there and laughed. Couldnt help it, his stupidity was amusing, what could i say? But my good natured chuckle was cut short from a sharp whisper behind me.
"Shhhhh! Don't attract his attention! I dont think hes seen me yet"
I fell silent, now fully aware there was someone breathing heavily about 6 feet behind me. I turned around and expected to die in flash of cold steel,
but it was a girl. Maybe 16, covered in scratches and underbrush. We just sort of stared at eachother for maybe 5 minutes before i finally blabberd out
"Where you the one banging on my door?"
She sat silently, watching the cop car from behing a wooden bench, untill finally it pulled away into the dark. She stood up.
"Ummm, yeah, sorry. He was chasing me and...well ive been to a couple partys here and...i thought i could just law low here for a bit."
"Yeah, sure....thats fine"
She smiled and walked inside. I rubbed my temples and tried to get the haze to lift from my head, to much shit to take in within so little time. I turned on the living room light and sparked up a fat spliff. She sat down across from me and eyed the joint.
"You want some?"
"Absolutley"
She took a huge rip off the spliff and seemed to realx a bit. leaning back in the chair and letting the smoke drift from her mouth lazily.
"So, could you tell me why that pig was after you?"
"What? Oh, yeah. I was walkind down the road about a half mile from here, smoking a joint and enjoying the stars yunno? Not doing anything bad or nuthin. When this white car pulls up right next to me. He rolls down his window and asked me if i needed a ride. I squinted and said i didn't. He had this big light shining on me so it was hard to see his face, but i could see inside the car. His laptop was lightin up everything, you could see his dispatch radio an shit. So before he could say another word, i took off in the woods. I ran maybe a quarter mile before coming out at the end of your street. I figured i was safe, so i started walking down the road that connects to yours, when i see the fucker coming straight at me, I turned around and sprinted into the backyard of the first house down there, i stayed behind the houses and moved up untill i reconized yours. You know that fire pit you've got out there? I tripped over it and thought it looked familier, so i whent around the front and reconized your porch. I walked up and knocked on your door, I even yelled your name but i just saw a light turn off and figured you'd gone to bed. So....I hid, and thats when you walked out."
By now the spliff was nothing but a foul tasting stink of nothing. The living room was hazy with smoke and i had finally come down off my paranoia trip. I let her sleep on my couch. Rejecting her offer of a special "thank you"(I'm 19, even though she was beautiful, some things are actually illegal for a reason)
The next morning we said our goodbuys and she set off back home. Leaving me with one half finished story, and another completely new one. But right now i must retire to the smoking den and watch the billions of bright lights through my kick ass sky-light. peace and love dont push and shove
