MI: Stem cell, medical marijuana proposals head for November ballot

A proposal to relax state law on embryonic stem cell research was approved this morning for the November ballot.

State Elections Director Chris Thomas reported that backers of the proposal had turned in 569,576 signatures. Based on a staff review, he said at least 497,209 are valid -- more than 100,000 beyond the minimum number needed.

It will be one of two questions on the Nov. 4 ballot. The other proposal would legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

The marijuana proposal will be ballot proposal question No. 1 and the stem cell question will be ballot proposal No. 2.

The Board of State Canvassers is working on the ballot language for each of the proposals. Each summary is limited to 100 words.

On Wednesday the Michigan Court of Appeals prohibited the board from placing a third proposal on the ballot, a broad initiative that would change the size of the legislative, judicial and executive branches of government.

The ruling will be appealed within the next few days to the Michigan Supreme Court, said Andrew Nickelhoff, the attorney for the Reform Michigan Government Now! ballot proposal.

Nickelhoff said the group is prepared to appeal in federal court if the state's high court declines to reverse the appeals court decision.
