Ah yes, Cornell 77 is a classic. Definitely the best Scarlet>Fire out there. The Boston(5/7/77) and Buffalo(5/9/77) shows, before and after Cornell, are also fantastic, pretty much anything from 77 is a keeper. I always like '73 and '80 shows as well, depends on my mood. 73 has some great long jams and the boys were really at the top of their game then. But in 80 Brent was starting to shine and the sound was definitely more rockin. I've got hundreds of sbds on disc but I think I probably play these three years about 90% of the time.

So Pride, are you old enough to have gone to any shows yourself? Between 1985 and 1995 I was fortunate enough to have gotten to about(lost count ) 30 shows. Damn those are such good memories. My life has seen a lot of change since then, nearly all for the better, but the one thing I really miss is going to see the Dead. As the saying goes "There is absolutely nothing like a Grateful Dead concert"

Smile the dead

No im not old enough to have expierenced a real Dead show. Im only 20 so the best thing i have expierenced Is Phil & Friends, and RatDog. Over the summer i got to see the Rhythm Devil (billy, brent, Kimock, and mike gordon.) That was a lot of fun. I would have to agree that in 77 they were on top of their game, completely flawless. The winterland 77 show is also crazy, i loved the help on the way->slipknot->franklins tower, one of the best, atleast i think so. The day after (or maybe that night) brent broke his arm and they had to cut the tour short, what a shame! I am also a huge fan of 74, i think they jammed way more in 74 than 77. I cannot remember the date but the Providence Civic Center Show is great. If you have it on archive, go back and listen to China cat->Mud Love Buddy Jam->I know you rider. The transitions are amazing, the MLBJ is sick. In the second set of the show they play a huge jam (something like 30 mins) into one of my favorite US Blues, its super chill and relaxed, this is my favorite US Blues. I am trying to think of some other great shows to talk about, i'll get back to it in a while.

I'm a freshman in college and I've been a deadhead ever since 9th grade or so. Love them. Sucks that I've only seen RatDog, Phil and Friends, and The dead and not the original band. They are amazing. I used to trade shows and everything, but got way too busy with school to keep doing it.

Cal-Expo was a great venue. One of the best shows I went to was one of the Cal shows in '86. We were able to walk right up and get a spot on the grass about 15' in front of Jerry. They opened with One More Saturday Night and I think it was the first and only time they ever did that. Apparently they had a power problem the night before(Saturday Night), right at the end of the show, and couldn't do the encore. So they basically opened Sunday's show with Saturday's planned encore.

Another great Venue was Alpine Valley up in Wisconsin. It was in the middle of these corn fields out in the middle of nowhere. Some farmer would clear out some land and let all the Dead Heads camp there. For 3 days it would be this Dead Head village with thousands of happy trippin people. The show I saw there in '87 was probably the best I ever went to. The China Cat>Rider was smokin and later they pulled out All Along The Watchtower, only the second time it had ever been played. Nobody really knew what it was at first, not expecting the Dead to be playing Hendrix(well Dylan, but they did it Hendrix style) but when people figured it out everyone went nuts.

Here's a link to a downloadable version of that Alpine Valley Show. It's an audience recording but tip top quality for an aud. Definitely worth the down load Internet Archive: Details: Grateful Dead Live at Alpine Valley Music Theatre on 1987-06-26

I really stinks that i am too young to have seen the dead. But i have a friend who is about my age and was able to see them (but not really appreciate them) because his parents were deadheads.

I believe the GD to be the greatest band ever to perform. 2nd place goes to all the many JGB incarnations. Legion of Mary in 74-75 was incredible. Get some of those recordings and puff a fatty and melt into the zone. Pre-legion Jerry and Merl from 72-73 is the most beautiful music i have ever heard.
My first Dead show was MSG 9-12-91. A Terrapin for the ages...
So about 20 shows from there until the end...
Moved to CA the year after Jerry Died

On a side note there is a tribute to Martin Fierro happening at the Fillmore in SF on 8/8/08. Martin was a member of Legion of Mary, and Zero, and he passed away this year. A remarkable man by all accounts. Steve Kimock will be MC'ing the benefit and Zero will be playing. It is fixin to be a memorable night. Kimock is impressive!

wow finally a log I know alot about

Well I was blessed with being able to witness 75 Greatful Dead and Garcia shows before Jerry Passed On. I was not turned on to them untill 1988 and have been to mostly east coast shows so I can not give an oppinion on midwest and west coast venues. Bur for my years I can give my oppinion on what I have seen.

Best show I have been to: 10/8/89 Hampton Virginia, Billed as the The Warlock's, This was the show that brought back Dark Star to the set list after more than 10 years. The energy from the band and the fans was just unbelievable, I never experinced that level energy since.

My most favorite venues are as follows:

Stadium: RFK, Washington DC and Rich Stadium Buffalo New York
Outdoor Non-Stadium: Buckeye Lake
Most Senic: Highgate Vermont
Best Indoor Arena: Large: Capital center/Us Air Arena Landover Maryland/ Small: Hampton Virginia.

Since the passing of Jerry I have been to see all the different bands that the band members have orginized including, The Other Ones, The Dead, Rat Dog, and Phil and Friends, and Micky Harts Band. Unfortunatlly none of these bands have come close to giving the feelings I had during the time when Jerry was around. Don't take this as they suck. They are far from that and are some of the best shows out there for this era.

But by far the Best Dead Experiance you can find now is Dark Star Orchastra. I see them every chance I get and the similarities at times are freightning. I have been to shows where if you close your eyes you will swear you are at a real dead show. The only thing that I have noticed lately about DSO is the current sound mixer appears to have never been to an actual GD show. I most recently saw them at the All Good Festival in West Virgina and finnaly saw them using a real concert sound & light system. ( not the theater/ club system I am use to ) WOW the lighting was right on and the music was perfect BUT the mixing was AWFULL!!!! If it was just this show I would just chalk it up to the Mixing person was enjoying the festival a little to much. But for the last few DSO shows I have been to I noticed the same thing MIXING SUCKED. ( Bass to loud at the wrong times, Mic's not turned up for critical lyrics, Guitar solos washed out ECT).

I do not want to discourage anyone from seeing them in fact I want everyone to go see them and support them because they are the one band capable of bringing back the experiance I remember. I just hope they are getting the feedback that I am giving, so to improve the experiance.

JG
