Alright, so let's talk about arguably the most mind-blowing genre for the lucky toker...what are your favourite bands, songs, etc.?

I've always been partial to Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane (check out the avatar), early Pink Floyd (when they had Syd Barrett), Cream, the Doors, late Beatles, Country Joe and the Fish, Love, the Byrds, the Grateful Dead, etc.

Been meaning to listen to some Trower for awhile; thanks. Somebody to Love's a fantastic song, true enough...I just really, really wish more of their songs were in the public consciousness than just that and White Rabbit. I can pretty much guarantee a lot of the stoners on here would get a huge kick out of Good Shepherd, Wooden Ships, ReJoyce, etc. Bless Its Pointed Little Head is one of the greatest live albums I've ever heard, too...every bit as good as the Who live, I'd say.

My favorite has always been CSNY when I'm just sitting around being mellow. But I really love any of the southern rock,Allman,Lynrd,Outlaws.Blackfoot. So much good stuff from the 60's and 70's.

Listen to Dr Dog. They're a great band from philly. Their album we all belong is especially good and fate has some great songs too. Songs I suggest you check out: The old days, the ark, army of ancients, alaska, way the lazy do, worst trip, my old ways. Many more good songs too. That's because "psychedelic rock" is so limited as a definition and is dead as a genre. No one can make true psychedelic (acid rock is a better term) anymore. Besides refering to simply acid-rock bands, you limit the replies because psychedelic music covers other genres like stoner rock, shoegaze, lo-fi, post-rock, trip-hop etc.

Grateful Dead.. Any good Soundboard tapes from 69-74.. The Darkstars and Jams from these years are varied and some incredible versions... Live Dead is the best store bought example from that era...IMO this is some of the most underappreciated psychedelic rock.. Too much of the commercial crap is what people think Psychedelic Rock(Acid Rock) is ... Two cents.. Peace .dlj

what a band. too damn good. amongst the best psychadelia ever. too bad they are done. and i don't see h ow you could call them anything but psychadelic. the guy on youtube is right, possibly the best band no one has ever heard of

By all means name your favourite post-rock, trip-hop, etc., artists. I simply named the ones I enjoy, which do not include any of that sort of thing.

I guarantee you one of these albums in this list will blow your mind and are psychedelic in it's own way. it all depends on your curiosity and what you like in general. I know because the majority of your most played list at one time or another, I was extremely fond of and you'll be able to appreciate an album that is conceptual and furfilling.

Alright, "In An Airplane Over the Sea" blew my mind quite nicely--I can see how the rest would, too, but it's just not to my taste so much--although The Soft Bulletin was pretty great.

the genre's not dead, I gave you a perfectly good example of modern psychedelic rock. You just gotta stop living in the past and wise up to the underground music scene. Most of those bands you listed as psychedelic rock bands are also pop music from prior decades. You wont find much psychedelic rock in the pop music category any more.

Im telling you, check out Dr. Dog...also if you have time and are not afraid of new things check out My Morning Jacket...their album "Z" is great.

When I said it was dead I meant that it is dead as a respected genre that reaches the people and enjoys the popularity that it used to...I like quite a bit of modern underground/indie stuff, but for the most part, musically I live in the past because that's when quality music actually affected the cultural landscape, instead of being relegated to arcane status while the masses dine on mindless assembly-line pop. I get a lot of shit for living mostly in the past, but I say who does it hurt? I'll listen to what I want to and other people can enjoy the same liberty.

And no, I'm not inherently afraid of new things...that was a little offensive. I've heard some Dr. Dog, and they're pretty great.

Dr Dog isn't true psychedelic in my opinion, they have a neo-psychedelic style. The pureness of acid rock, not many bands are doing it anymore.

But I completely agree with 40oz in regards that there's so much good, psychedelic-like, 60s based music coming out these days:

Delta Spirit - Ode To Sunshine

War On Drugs - Wagonwheel Blues

Two amazing albums that are complete throwbacks of the 60s, but pushing musical limits, Delta Spirit with their perfect blend of northern and southern rock, War on Drugs pushing the limits towards ambient rock while sounding bob dylanesque. In my opinion, those are the two best albums of 2008.

Yeah, true psychedelic/acid rock is indeed rare nowadays, hence my avid listening of pre-1970 gems. I live in the past and I'm proud of it.

You should check out the box set Nuggets - Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1965-68. Lots of lost garage classics and "forgotten" bands here.

for some reason i take personal offence to that statement. Dont hate on electronica. Theres alot of electronica thats way more psychedelic than your deffinition of psychedelic or acid rock. Before i saw that post i thought you were just a new wave hippy and i was cool with that but then you had to go bashin defenceless music. I feel its my duty to pull you up on your ignorance.
