I started growing my 3rd plant about a month or 2 ago in my conservatory, which get lots of light as it is south facing. Recently I went away for 5 days and decided to cover the soil with stones( stop soil drying up) and give it a good water with some miracle grow plant food, so it would not get thirsty.

When I returned my plant went from a lovely healthy looking green plant to a sorry state for a plant, the lower leaves had fallen off and were brown and yellow as in the picture, i have read up and dont know whether this is nutrient burn or something with the soil It is happening to leaves at the bottom and working its way up to the higher leaves.

I also move the plant outside when the weather is good.

Can anyone help and is there anyway to save it? I was thinking if it is the soil to replant it in fresh compost and give it a good water and see if this helps.

You should definitely check to see if it's rootbound, which judging from your pictures could be a possibility. Also, get a good handle on your pH if you haven't already, because some of the scorching on the lower leaves makes me think something is locked out. There's a troubleshooting form in my signature - fill that out as best as you can and you should get more tailored recommendations.

Hi cheers dude. This is my 3rd plant ive grown, i do one every year now, but all i do is plant it in compost and let nature take its cause in my conservatory. All i really do is give it plant food and when its ready harvest.
This is the best I can do on short notice will try and buy something to tell the ph stuff in the next couple of days. cheers for the help

I'd definitely do a pH test on your rainwater when you can, just to be sure. Unless you live near a really industrialized area you're rainwater probably isn't going to be too acidic, but it's still good to know for future reference. Also, if you're using rainwater exclusively you need to add a product like Calmag Plus to supplement the calcium and magnesium that's generally provided through most tap water, but not rainwater. In more cases than not tap water is perfectly fine to use, but again you'll want to know the pH of it as well.

Yeah definitely get them into bigger pots. They went dry. Water them good for a couple days and they should perk up.
When you go away for a couple days take a large pepsi bottle, flush it good and fill with water. poke a hole in the cap and insert a 1/4" or 3/8" tube a couple inches in the cap. Turn the bottle upside down and then stick it in the soil. It'll keep the plant hydrated longer. They also sell glass globes that do this same thing.

I agree With Mr Clandestine. It looks rootbound (the roots have used up all the space in the pot) Carefully transfer it to a bigger pot, and for the first week give only 1/2 strength nutes. I promise your plant will do better!
