Temperature/ Root Problem
Okay so this is my first grow and im so excited I mean who would't be. Im 4 weeks into veg using 4' 4 bulb T5HO FFOF soil and just started last week with 1/4 strength big grow. My bulbs at about 2"-4" away frow tops causes (at the hottest) 85 deg F but the top of the box is is between 77-81 deg F. I have tho 6" inline ductor boosters as the exaust ( one on top and one on the backside wall). The intake is just one of those 6" fans rated at 250 CFM (dont think it is but it works.) When the door closes the exaust fans slow down a bit causing me to think i need to at another intake. I have to also turn on 2 other single bulb T5 HO mounted horizontally that I am using for flowering due to what i've read on lack of light getting through the canopy to lower parts of the plants. This will also raise the temps a bit but the 4' 4 bulb T5 will be closer to the exaust causing the hot air to be drawn out faster. There is two 6" clip fan blowing on the tops and bulbs which is more than efficent plus exchanging air in the box rather well. Box is 2' x 4' x 4.5'
Is that temp too high on the tops?? Should I raise the light? Plants look healthy and strong and within a week the roots filled up the 6" sq pot I transplanted them to after the 4" sq pot i started them in. a couple of root heads pealed out of the drain hole and turned gray and crusted up. I am not able to get to the garden store till tomorrow and want to know if these root tips will spring back to health when transplanted or if i need to cut them off. When size pot should I transplant to I was thinking a gallon and a half sq pot. Thanks |

Temps with high of 85 shouldn't be too bad. It's strain dependent to some degree, you may see a little stretch, but if it's your first grow, don't be too concerned. I believe that once a root dies, it is dead forever. I don't think they regenerate after death, they just get replaced by other new healthy roots. Final container size will dictate how large you can get these. Growing under fluoros your gallon and a half size sounds good to me. How long until you plan on flowering?

I havent used the big bloom yet but, now that you said that I realize its a must. Ya I was thinking maybe a 2 gallon pot because I have about 3 ft maybe a lil more to work with.
Also had a question when mixing the nutes...... I just started the 1/4 strenth Big grow, so should i be starting at 1/4 strength of Big Bloom and be mixing them in the same gallon of distilled water? I was planning on flowering around somewhere in the next two weeks. Last edited by xxxnick89xxx; Jul-05-2009 at 22:43. |

Why distilled water?

you can mix the nutes in the same gallon of water, but ALWAYS add them to the water and NEVER mix concentrates together!

more than likely. tap water is usually better for your plants because it still has a lot of the micronutrients in it that distilled doesn't. these are not only beneficial to your plants, but required.
have you been using calmag+? -shake
