MILITARY APPLICATIONS

White phosphorus munitions are primarily used by the U.S. military to make smoke screens or mark targets as a signaling mechanism, but also as an incendiary weapon, the Pentagon said. It is not considered a chemical weapon under international conventions. It is a colorless or yellowish translucent wax-like substance that smells a bit like garlic. The substance ignites easily in air at temperatures of about 86 degrees F (30 C) and its fire can be difficult to extinguish. It commonly is dispersed by high-explosive munitions.

PENTAGON'S VIEW OF THE WEAPON

The Pentagon says white phosphorus is a conventional munition that is not outlawed or illegal or banned by any convention. It states that it is legal to fire these weapons at enemy fighters "out of military necessity and in accordance with the rules of proportionality." In the November 2004 Marine-led offensive in Falluja that involved fierce urban fighting, the Pentagon acknowledged using white phosphorus weapons against enemy fighters in a what they called a "shake-and-bake technique." Shells containing white phosphorous were fired at insurgents in foxholes or other covered positions to smoke them out and they were then hit with high-explosives artillery rounds.


INTERNATIONAL ACCORD

The Convention on the Prohibition of Use of Certain Conventional Weapons went into effect in 1983. Protocol III of the convention prohibits the use of incendiary weapons against civilians. The protocol also forbids their use against military targets within concentrations of civilians, except when the targets are clearly separated from civilians and "all feasible precautions" are taken to avoid civilian casualties. The United States is a party to the overall convention, but has not ratified the incendiary-weapons protocol.

Not sure I ever understood the phosphorus weapons stuff. I guess they're saying it's better to be blown into small pieces by high explosives than be killed by phosphorus. Personally, I wouldn't want to die by *either* means; dead is dead. I guess they don't want to outlaw every means of killing people though, because then we'd be stuck with...peace.

Phosphorus is the new mustard gas.

I just watched about two hours of CSPAN debate where a lebanese newspaper writer said that hezballah is now looking for a cease fire and welcomes international peace keeping force.. as long as that international peace keeping force consists only of the nations of syria and Iran at the lebanese israeli border. Think Israel is gunna go for that?? HAHAHAHAHAHA

The lebanese guy also said that hezbullah thinks they are winning this war and that the entire arab community is rallying behind hezbellah and looks forward to their defeat of israeli invaders.

The Israeli general said that once this offensive is complete they will in fact persue the source of the missels and insurgents (iran/syria) with full use of force if the international comunity does not act to restrict the deployment of these missels to military extremests (terrorists if you will). He made it sound pretty clear that if Iran so willingly gives terrorists this technology they will most likely give them nuclear weapons as well and that is concern is paramount to Israel and the rest of the free world.

Let me clue the world in on something... if Israel stopped getting hit with missles.. they would probably be much more inclined to stop advancing in lebanon and allow (real) international forces to supress offensive activity in lebanon. Now I know this conflict is a whole three weeks old and the liberals have already forgot how this whole thing got started (two soldiers.. AND A FUCK TON OF MISSLES SHOT AT CIVILIANS.. with a lebanese government saying.. oops.. too bad.. nothing we can do.. and we dont want any help either.).. but lets see here..

It shows iranian military trucks delivering missels to peoples houses in Kfar Qana.. then a short time later arial video of missles being fired from those areas. The israeli military reviewed satalite photos of the building full of civilians that just got "hit" and determined that the building was still standing 8 hours after their air strike of the area.. and most likely Hamas/Hezbullah blew up the building full of their own people to try and win over the heart of the international community.. Im not saying its the truth.. but thats what they are saying.. All I know is war sucks and I hope Israel gets their damn point across this time.. and if they bomb the fuck out of irans nuclear processing plants.. all i can say is.. TEAM ISRAEL! FUCK YEA!

hezballah actually has a bunch of teams of people operating underground with internet connections going on all the USA msg boards and trying to sway people to their side. I'd just have to bet that alot of these people that show up with 3 posts and just to talk about how terrible israel is (in bad english if you noticed) are probably hezballah.

I'm going to step out on a limb here and say that I have a hard time backing either side of the Israel-Hezbollah dispute. There's tremendously hurtful violence being instigated by both parties, and I find it hard to justify in any fashion. I don't say that because it's the safe stance to take but because I think anyone with any sense of something other than polarized righteous indignation must see that both sides ought to exercise restraint. Immediately.

LOL.....I'll give ya fore warning on this one here. I don't tolorate people pointing out members and calling them DEA, etc........in all fairness, your walking the fine line here. Hezbollah has by no means infiltrated Cannabis.com in order to recruit people to take up the cause.

The point is Israel is using chemicals weapons, and against innocent women and children none the less. I've never liked the UN, but they would gain some points with me if they went into Israel and arrested generals, politicins, anyone involved with this war for war crimes.

and it's really kind of disturbing to hear excuses for the use of these, what can only be called, weapons of mass destruction...DU and white phosphorous...

all i hear is, they're so bad, so we've just GOT to drop these bombs on them that melt skin and give people cancer...to protect their freedom...

there's no justification for it on either side.

If they arrested generals and politicians for letting their troops use DU and phosphorus, they'd probably want to start the arresting in the U.S., since we pioneered the concept of using DU in munitions. Britain, France and the Soviet Union all also make DU munitions. They're probably sold to anyone who wants to buy them. Their purpose isn't for civilians though, they're for piercing hardened targets, a cheaper alternative to tungsten, albeit a more dangerous one. However, in the context of bullets, well...I dunno. I mean, how much care do you take with people you're trying to kill? Should we issue the enemy flak jackets and kevlar AND promise not to use depleted uranium THEN try to kill them? If they harm OUR troops, which they might, that's a totally different issue. If that's the case, they should be voluntarily banned immediately.

As for as white phosphorus, "Use of white phosphorus against military targets (outside civilian areas) is not specifically banned by any treaty." Sooo...

One might contend that lots of Lebanon is a civilian area. But if that's so, then why are militants firing weapons from those areas, mostly at civilians elsewhere? Doesn't armed conflict in an area, by both sides, mean that A) this is no longer a civilian area; and B) wake up, civilians, it's time to get out of here?

It's all moot anyway. Israel is obviously determined to destroy as much as they can of Hezbullah: infrastructure, militants, weapons, vehicles, buildings. I'm not gonna argue with that either, because I remember the day Hezbullah blew up 241 innocent civilians...Americans. I'm deeply sorry that the Lebanese let militant extremists occupy their country, and as a result, civilians are dying and suffering. Maybe next time, they'll be a little more cautious about letting extremists call the shots in their country.
