Eating 'mature' Cannabis Butter?

I've got some cannabis butter that's been in the freezer for about 8months and has a mouldy substance on top of it and the whole thing smells a bit, well, cheesy.

Would I be Ok to just scrape the stuff off and give it a rinse under the tap or am I risking serious food poisoning?

There's a fair bit of butter and it's really good stuff, so i'd be loathe to throw it away, and I'm thinking that it's going to be heated pretty hot in the pan when I melt it anyway - plus each portion that's eaten will only contain small amounts of the butter anyway.

Anyone got an opinion?

Heating the oil to at least 100 deg F will kill the mold.

I am in the same situation. I don't see any mold though. It could have some freezer burn. Been in the same container in the fridge since last August 2007. Approx. 10 months.

It should be safe, RIGHT?

If you make sure you scrape off all the visible mould and throw that away, then make sure you wash your hands/container/knife etc. Give it another smell, see if it's better. As long as it doesn't smell too bad after this, it should be fine. I frequently eat cheese and butter that has developed a little bit of mould. The key is in the smell/taste. If you really can't palate the food then that is your body's natural way of saying its no good. If the smell is fine and it tastes ok, then the chances of it causing you too much trouble is small. This does not go for things like raw meat/yoghurt though. These are things you need to be real careful with.

Mold grew in the freezer? I did not know that was possible. Are you sure its not ice crystals or something?

Scrape off any gel-y or fuzzy looking crud, and then run it through the cannabutter washing technique as if it were fresh. Stickied at the top of 'edibles'.
I wouldn't personally want to eat it, but if you do decide to eat it, 'wash' it first and make certain you have brought it to a temperature high enough to kill bacteria before re-freezing.

I wouldn't eat it but if your going to eat it at least reheat it to kill anything that grew on it off. Even then though if whatever grew on it produced a toxin or spores heating it won't matter.

In any properly processed butter, the only thing that would mold is plant material that didnt get filtered out. So,,, in other words,,, it wasn't properly processed if it molded in the freezer. Not sure if anything can truely mold in the freezer. Scrape it, cook it and eat it. Have fun.
