orange salty like residue when making butter?
I am not sure what happened, but this is only my second time making cannabutter...There was a rust color residue that settled at the bottom of the butter after I finished..The smell was very potent, and it had some granular salts in it? The color scares me though..I know the buds had a lot of orange hair in it and some orange, and also it was super sticky and strong smelling..I have the mixture in the fridge right now. I just wanted to get some input as to why it may have turned orange?

Okay a few questions:
-Did you use water in your extraction along with the butter? -Was the butter salted or unsalted ('sweet cream')? -Is the residue grainy or does it also appear to have some plant matter in it? -Do you know the origin of the bud used, or have any info on it? Have you read the washed cannabutter tutorial sticky in edibles? It's a really good place to start.

I did use a salted stick, by accident could that make it orange? I don't know the origin of it..I should have taken a photo, but was in such a rush to make this butter
...The residue was salty feeling so I'm assuming that was the salt from the butter not the crystals right? The only thing is that rust color..I have cooked numerous things in the same pot and never gotten that color..The bud did have lots of orange hairs in it, but I thought the butter was supposed to be green! I should have just smoked it, but def. don't want to throw this away if it can be used..Just would like to figure out why the odd coloration. No, I didn't do the water..I used a recipe I had found online

Did you use water in the extraction?
You will want to go back and do a liquid-liquid extraction to clear out impurities. I suspect that you may have accidentally gotten an insoluble salt from fertilizer residue in the buds, possibly reacting with salt in the butter itself- normally this is not a problem at all, since most of us do butter in a melted butter/water/plant matter combination, and the ionic substances actually go into solution in the aqueous phase and are washed away. Seriously, read the washed cannabutter thread. You can still perform a wash on your butter at this stage, no problem at all!

When you cook butter on its own for long enough you will get some grainy, brown residue at the bottom.
When butter melts you can see its has the oil (clarified butter) then the little white solid bits. When cooked these solids can burn. This is why regular butter burns on its own in a pan. Try clarifying your butter by melting it gently then pouring off the clear oil, leaving behind the white residue. |
