I think we should honor what is sacred and not take life for granted. I think just sitting here and breathing, being alive is an absolute miracle. I recognise the depth and value of human life and emotion and the breadth of life which is greater than myself and how can anything else be right but to consider these things with an attitude of sobriety, solemnity, and humility?
Laughter is for rejoicing, not for foolishness, and life is to be honored with a pure heart. |

if a belief is so fragile that it cannot stand the weight of laughter, then it must be fatally flawed. if we can see the humorous side of our most cherished beliefs and still have faith in them, we know that they have at least some small merit.

I think what he's saying is that it's not so much a matter of laughing at ones beliefs, but with them. Even Buddha laughed a lot and was renouned for having a good sense of humor. Personally, I agree with Inferius, we should be seeking paths to hapiness and betterment. If you're so enveloped in your beliefs that all you experience is mystery at everything that contradicts them, they will not hold. I like the Taoist (and arguably buddhist) view on this subject; not fighting or grasping at anything, just flowing with what is in total acceptance, making the best of what you can and making peace with what's unchangeable.

The only people who would be offended by the passive nature of the opening thread is somone who is more concerned with teh belif of others than their own. People with weak faith, wether it's in some god or themselves feel threatend by anything that may pose a threat to their way of life.
This coniditon is caused by insecruity that grabs the human race globally, by the balls. |

I laugh with those who are laughing at my beliefs, because if something I have done has been able to bring them joy enough that they feel the need to laugh, then I have helped them in some way.
I fully accept that others may not see things the way I do, and I embrace that fact. I try to understand it, and I try to reach things with understanding, and not judgement. If you put me infront of someone who had killed, I would try to understand why they did so. I wouldnt judge them for what they did, but I would not cry out against their punishment for killing another, as there are rules in our society that one must follow, or be punished, irregardless of if you agree with them. I think each and every one of us is a testament to that, or at least I would think so. I understand that my smoking pot is illegal, and if caught, I will be punished for breaking the law, no matter how much I may not agree with it. If you can not laugh with others about that which makes you you, then I think you may want to re-evaluate that which is in your life. Time here, in this life, is limited, so why not try to enjoy as much as possible. I believe in some things that would garner things much worse then laughter if said to others, but I would not fault them for doing such things, as they simply do not understand where I am coming from. Nor do I understand where they are coming from, so I can not expect them to see things the same as I, nor can they expect me to see things the same as them. So when they act, I try to understand, not judge, and perhaps I can see why they acted as such towards that which I believe in.

laughing at your beliefs is a good thing to be able to do. many beliefs are rediculous, or extreme. i'm vegetarian, but my friends laugh at me and tell me to eat meat, and i laugh with them, because i know how strainge the idea of vegetarianism was before i was vegetarian. i think the original post is awesome.

It goes both ways, but religious beliefs have been the majority for so long in our society that people forget that it is a 2-way street. |
