I lost a friend when I was in school. For a long time after I kept thinking I saw her, not that she kept appearing or anything. But I'd spot someone in a crowd and in my head I'd think, there's 'Mary' - then it'd register that she was gone. It happened tons of time over the years.

Yes. A friend of mine killed himself and although I never see him, I always feel him close by.

And, it is kinda freaky

i'm sure your friend appreciates that you find his presence freaky.

um.... is it not possible that such a powerfull emotional loss would trigger the brain to "feel" what would relieve such pain the most? (that being the return of his/her presence).

It is not in my head. It can not be describded but I know it when I feel it.
It actually is comforting.
