Okay, everyone tells me (including my dr.) that the most cost efficient way to us cannabis is to grow your own. My worry is that I'll end up killing it cause I won't do something right (lol). I'm not very much a "green thumb."

Anyways, a friend of mine used to grow. She said that all I need to do, since I'm only going to be growing one (or two) to just get a big cardboard box and line it with aluminum foil, then put a regular light in there, keep it shut with the light on and the foil should help with the heat. She said leave the light on for 18 hours then off for 6, and water it once a day making sure the soil's always damp. She says it worked great for her, but I want to get other opinions first before I dive into it... any helpers?

    <3

Cannabis is a really hardy plant and it's real easy to grow. All you need is light (cfl's or other flourescents work well for one plant), fresh air and nutrients. Keep it simple and you will be able to keep it alive, I guarantee it.

Read the Growfaq here and if you still have questions click the link in my sig to the world famous Overgrow Growfaq, an extensive categorized list of questions.

Don't believe everything your friend says. You don't need to water every day and the plant likes to be somewhat dry between waterings. The soil does not need to be damp all the time.

Wouldn't use tinfoil either.....try white paint (matte) or mylar. No offense to your friend but I probably wouldn't take her advice as gospel either. :)

hahaha i bet her plants proper sucked ass lol, nah, you water more like once every 3-4 days, like perp said, the soil needs to dry out first, so the roots can get oxygen, weedhound is also right, but didnt say why, tinfoil creases and can end up reflecting large amounts of heat and light into tiny 'hot spots' like a magnifying glass... the result is toasted weed plant...

really all you need to grow is water, light and Co2, (i would say soil but hydroponics doesnt use soil) their are alot of guides on the internet, and once you read one detailed guide, you wont need to search anymore...

for example my favourite video beginner guide: http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=6583702968043014177&q=weed

A little bit dry between waterings. Believe it or not although pot grows worldwide, it's generally, ya see, not growin, in this kinda flat, river-bottom, flood-plain type land as much as in land with some slant to it so that - even in the tropics, when it rains, it drains. Ok?

You need to use at the very least compact fluoros and I'm gonna tell you now kid - pot, is a LIGHT hog. It's why people didn't just defy the law by growing indoors for decades, until the technologies came to put some pretty powerful light onto an area.

The foil's not really that bad. It reflects a good 90% of the light back around and believe me you're probably not gonna have that much light.

The growin' of plants, has got potential to make ya a little bit mad because it's all this hustle for something that goes so slow: yet if you give it the finger it won't do shit.

Hey - of all the things you could be trying to grow, pot's one of the easier ones.

Look up hempy buckets. They're super simple, super lightweight when made using perlite, and DIRT friggin cheap if you use something like gravel. You put a hole in the bucket two inches from the bottom and feed it hydroponic nutrients every couple of days till it dribbles out of the hole.

These hempy buckets have the advantage of being VERY light weight when made of almost all perlite,

they're very very forgiving if you get some hydro nutrients,

and if you do something wrong ever you can just make a new batch of nutes and pour to fix the problem.

Soil... it grows a little slower, and it can get things like fungus gnats down in it, and other critters that will chew roots.

You can grow the shit with freaking MIRACLE grow in dirt, JUST like tomatoes or cucumbers and I wanna welcome you to the fold of alllllllll the people who are now, after the State couldn't teach you, make you, force you - you're gonna become of all f***in things - a half ass chemist. I hope you like being a smarter tinkerbell than you were before you started growing because it won't be a little while and the amount of natural savvy you are gonna have, is gonna go up.

At the very very first you don't have to have much light but after about just a week or two you start needing more, and more, and MORE light.
Those hours for lights on are real good,

then when you want them to show sex, male or female, switch to 12 hours on, 12 off (we call this ''twelve-twelve'' vs ''eighteen-six''.

Now if temperatures PARTICULARLY those ROOTS get more than 90 degrees the plant's gonna stop growing.

If you're growing indoors, just do something to makes sure a lot of light isn't hitting the pot because it'll turn to heat when it's absorbed by the dark colored pot and soil.

Pot, grows almost identically, to tomatoes and even like cucumbers although there's a dab of diff not much.

You'll be looking for the word 'drainage' with your soil. The better it drains the more oxygen will get down to the roots with each watering and the more the plant will grow pretty robustly.

I dunno how much stealth you've gotta have. I hope not much. That makes it a lot easier because when the plants get more grownup they start smelling sorta like a pine tree, ya know, kind of resin like? Like a field of big wild weeds, you know how they'll all have their own smell.

Hey - real sunlight is good shit. You can bake stuff, but real sunlight's got a lot of hard to purchase, blue light in it: and a little goes a fair way to growth.

I have lined closets with aluminum foil before. Any kind of highly reflective surface can sorta ping the light around till, after several corners, rays from several flat spots are hitting in another spot about the size of a quarter or a tennis ball or whatever and it'll burn out the green cells that make food: it's called ''light burn.'' Hot spots.

This hotspots thing - I have to admit - it's real, tinkerbell and - ya know it's more likely to happen when you're trying to get in as much light as ya can - and light intensity drops off FOUR times, for every 2 TIMES farther you get - ok? So there's this big, sorta scientific mandament or mandate, to get your plants, - pretty close to the bulbs.

Well, if the bulbs get real REAL close as in a half, maybe an inch say - the pounding magnetic field around a fluoro's tube, just flat kills plant material. Thanks for playing, tell plant evolution hi, and plant god I never could get that shit about he is perfect but always pissed off, pissed off, do this, do that - because that plant matter is gonna go plant night-night if it touches the fluoro bulbs.

But there's this temptation - well there's a mandate to put em pretty close - and try to provide, really, REALLY solid light reflection. People frown about the foil, - white, actually reflects as much or so, and you can have the same thing happen with any really good reflector so - you need to kinda not turn any of your light to heat, ok? THiS is real, REAL big in these little whatcha call a micro-grow ok? Everything in that sob needs to be silver, or white. In this way there will be as little of your light you'd like to grow weed, turning to heat - making the plants not grow, - hey potentially - two ways. If it overheats, it doesn't matter - the plants stall out, it's like trying to get me to do something around the house, no, no, and mO nOeZ for mo GROWz once the temps get way high. And then on top of it the light you're paying money to make that should keep reflecting around, and around, and around - it's not reaching the plant: you're sorta paying to just raise temps so - it sorta builds on you tinkerbell to not really control your light handling inside that box ok?

Tinkerbelle there is something at the Hom'e de Pot or Home Depot called '' temporary lighting '' and - they'll sell you this or that - but one of the things they peddle ya is a little dealio and - what you do is, you get an extension cord, and you pull the two wires apart, so you can separate the wires about - oh, maybe an inch - and - this thing, is a two piece little light socket thinglie and one side's got these two little sharp needle point pins, and as you screw these two together - it's all insulated on the outside - you CLAMP and ELECTRICALLY ATTACH this perfectly plain, kinda tough plastic light bulb socket onto an extension cord.
In construction we buy a 100' roll of cord and about a hundred of those little 79cent chinglies, and put light bulbs every ten feet as per regulations, or whatever for the location - and you're just on, as soon as you plug into the wall.

And I've built guerrilla grows out of these before, and let me give you some advice, if you do. Lay out in your head before hand, how you can let the lights hang, so they're not right ON the cardboard.

PUT the LIGHTS at MULTIPLE HEIGHTS so that the LIGHT isn't concentrated in JUST one SPOT. - NoW- this means also learn ahead of time about RISING HEAT and the DAMAGE it does to plant tissue. It'll kill em deader than my feelings for my ex wife's lawyer.

Keep your head around the fact that you need to spread the light around a lot yet not have bulbs just BURNING heat into pots. Use WHITE colored coverings for your pots or - hey if you have the possibility to do it tinkerbell

sit the pots down outside the box in a tray and have a box suspended there sorta sitting, on the top of the pot. This keeps you from

1)filling half the space with effectively useless dirt you're heating with your growing lights

2)burning the plants by concentrating the light TOO much in ONE spot - because you NEED a GOOD BIT ok, you'll see - they stall out if it's not just blazing bright in the box, but of course you don't want to burn plants, or start a fire.

Put the plants on 12/12, ALMOST right away. Pot plants really beef up a lot when they go into flower and if you have a say... 12 inch plant - you're gonna have LOTS of 18, 20 inch plant by the time it's over and the buds - we're sorta growing plants we created, they're all hybrids and - they grow SO densely that - they will get BURNED by too much HEAT - and they'll get FUNGUS that eats the buds up just wasting them to nothing so you NEED to reserve room for some AIR FLOW -that's why I suggest sitting the box on several cinder blocks or JUST on top say, two, 3 gallon, 5 gallon buckets. Line the box or paint it white and make it so when you lift it if you let the lower flaps open you can remove it and work if you need to.

This is a good thing about perlite hempy buckets. That perlite is white as paper and doesn't absorb heat. The darker the substrate the more energy it will hold in general and the lighter it is, the less it will hold. The perlite is also pest free that's good for a beginning grower but you have to buy hydroponic ferts. The perlite is also very lightweight, it weighs literally the way popcorn does. It's lighter than water and floats, you just put about two inches of water in a hempy bucket every couple of days, and the plants drink out of this and they also don't get root rot fungus in the roots. That's another way hempy buckets remove the threat of pathogens on the plant. No pythium class of root rot fungus.

Uh.. hey something else. Ok you're gonna have these bulbs, ok? And you're gonna have kinda a shitload of em in there, you also need to learn now about fans. Lots and lots of people use computer fans in these little grows, because you buy like the 4 inch fans, or 5 inch - this is like 100mm, or 125mm fans - kinda big for computer fans - off ebay for 5 bucks, but then just run them between 9 to 12volts - off a thrift store charger they buy.

You're gonna wanna google 'cannabis micro-grow'

and also ''low stress training'' or really it's ''auxin training cannabis'' - this is where you lay the plant's limbs down so the plant sorta senses that it's not up competing to get pollinated so it starts adding more and more and more buds as long as you keep laying them down. This is how people make one small plant, make a shitload of weed for the size grow: auxin distribution through laying the plant limbs down flat. Auxin is plant made growth hormone and when the plant is laid flat and held that way it senses it has to put out new growth to try to get to the sun and air above.

''Perlite hempy buckets'' is a good one

''avoiding hot spots in your grow'' is something.

''hydroponic nutrient, one part 'grow' formula - a bottle of this stuff and some distilled water and you're growing like a professional. You need to buy maybe a water filter so you can give the plant some purified water if ya want but that's up to you

And tinkerbell - you are gonna wanna get - i'm not exaggerating - as BIG a BOX as YOU CAN. Like - one that refrigerators come in? Stoves? Clothes Dryers? Yeah. Something pretty big will work LOTS better, LOTS.

Anyway welcome to the club of making your own personal grow stuff and space, it's really cool and fun, and the foil really will work, you just need to look up ''hot spots with grow lights'' and see people talk about how to minimize that. It's just good sense light distribution.

If you have - or buy - one of those 'pur' brand water filters that attaches to your sink, you can feed the plant purified water with bottled nutrients and that stuff's so well balanced - it's primo grade food for the plants. It makes the whole thing just a LOT - a LOT smoother as far as really getting the plant to grow, not just sit there like I went out and spritzed it with my water hose and hell with ''balinced new trishun!'' If you're gonna kinda try to DIY, and you're newbing it? The high quality fertilizer you mix a teaspoon into a gallon of purified water from your bathroom faucet or kitchen faucet attached water filter that costs like - I dunno like 25 bucks - I mean right there you are at the PINNACLE of high quality commercially mixed, lab tested plant nutrition. A bottle of General Hydroponics Flora Nova 'GROW' - the ONE PART Gen Hydro 'grow' - the flora nova one - it's like... I dunno 15 bucks for a quart and it lasts about... a year if you're doing one, two little plants at a time.

At this point you can skip dirt and just grow in a hempy bucket and never worry about the things that come with soil. But hey - this is superb nutrition even for soil.

Anyway I'm high just talking about growing, when I was a kid my folks had a fish/pets/plants shop and later on I worked on lots of stuff so I've seen almost everything ever built and don't talk about that at work any more so sometimes when everybody else is asleep early in the morning I just go on long, rambling talks about when I was a kid, and the entire internet, including the wires, was all made out of wood, and how the old internet, would get bugs in it, and have to be debugged. Like with some spray because that internet was called ''a bunch of old books - a bunch of THOSE - without no pictures.''

    Peace.
