Hair test v.s. hair follicle test: what's the difference?

A few weeks ago, I was offered a position for employment. Assuming it'd be a urine test, I brought synthetic urine with me. Unfortunately, it was a urine test and hair test. Assuming I'd fail the hair test, I took with every intention of never passing and being offered the job.

Well, I passed. And I start tomorrow.

The quick answer could be is that the company (oilfields/piping office) doesn't care about weed. She did not pull the root, and I came home and researched that there is a hair test and then there is the hair follicle test (which sounds like DOT/FBI/CIA shit). I have smoked practically every day, before bed for...years? More so on weekends. Weeks prior to this I dyed my hair. I also put product in my hair every day.

So, what gives? What are some things that could've contributed to my passing? Does the concentration of drugs in my hair diminish as my hair grows?
