Space per plant?

Say that one was trying to make the most efficient use of one acre for growing outdoors. How many plants would fit in an acre? I read a thread on reddit that claimed cannabis plants need 9 square feet per plant, and an acre is 43,560 square feet. with no spacing besides the 9 square feet, the thread claims that one could have 4840 plants in an acre. Does this sound reasonable?

If this is unreasonable, what would be a more reasonable plant number and or spacing? I'm aksing just because I want to have an idea for plant amounts whenever my state legalizes medical or recreational. I also read about a 20 acre farm with 32,000 plants. that's roughly 1000 plants an acre. Food for thought.

    That's actually 1600 PPA
About a third of the max.
With those numbers a lot of space is set aside for access.
And that is what makes it reasonable.
But, what do I know? I'm jus' a small time, personal, medical grower.
