This is something that has irked me for a long time, and I'm wondering what your opinions are on the matter. It's this double-standard that seems to prevail in society's attitude toward women when it comes to sex. That being; this so casually-used term "slut" that men (and some women) tend to apply to women who have a lot of sex with a lot of partners. In fact, people seem to be so overzealous with the term at times, that they'll be quick to throw this offensive word in the face of a woman who barely go outside the bounds of single-partner relations.

Human beings, male and female, are naturally driven by a powerful sex drive of greatly-varrying degrees for everybody. Some of us will have a lot of sex with one partner because we enjoy the emotional security and intimacy of intellectual as well as physical bonding. Some relieve sexual urges by picking up one-night-stands in bars for a quick fix. Some will just masturbate a lot. Like any animal, we are driven to mate and driven to relieve sexual urges.

And yet, just look at how people see a man or a woman who each do the same thing. If a man picks up a girl in a bar, has sex with her, he's just being... well, a man! If a guy has sex with a lot of women, well he's just a real ladies-man. So suave and cool, so charming and skilled. No no, he's not a slut, he's the highly-skilled master of seduction for whom great admiration is due.

Conversely, a woman has sex with a guy she just meets and she's "giving it away easily", which means she's a "slut", of course. She has sex with multiple partners without need for emotional attachement, and the slutty title is pretty much guaranteed.


I have a strong suspicion that outdated beliefs about female sexuality from hundreds of years back still persist; this rediculous notion that only men should be considered healthy for having a powerful sex-drive, whereas women are only there for the guys to enjoy. It's grossly offensive, I know, but I think subconsciously a lot of the more shallow people in the world still believe this. It's all akin back to the days when there was actually debate on whether or not women really enjoyed sex; neh, that it is not their place to enjoy sex, only to seek the emotional, physical, and financial security of a man; further, the fulfillment of the maternal instinct to bear children. An outdated chauvinistic belief-system that the pleasures of the world are designed for men, and a woman's role is merely to ensure his gratification.

Or could the cause be entirely different? What do you think?

It made sense before the advent of birth control and DNA paternity testing, when the only way to know a child's parentage and avoid incest down the line was to assure that the woman, at least, was monagamous. And women have ended up on the butt end of social taboos from the dawn of time.

Now it's just a sorry vestige of primitive taboos we are well rid of.

It ain't cheatin if you share with your SO. Some folks have a lot less inhibitions than others, and enjoy multiple partners. Others need to loosen up some. Its all a matter of personal preference. Now, as far as folks with a big hole in their face, thye need to keep their private life private. There is no reason that a woman can't go in search of somebody to satisfy her needs, same as any man....as long as they don't kiss and tell. Discression is the better part of valor.

I agree^^, men can be sluts too. It's really all about what you prefer. Some men like slutty women. Some women like slutty men. And then there are those who prefer no to catch herpes.

yeah i do too, but somehow i still mean it in a different way. i think that some old puritan belief from our countries beginnings has led to the double standard. Men and women are sluts, it just depends on the person. i have to agree with steve that people have different levels of inhibitions. Did anyone catch that "sex in America" the other night on 20/20? For the first time I started to understand a polygamist relationship without the horrible abomination of child abuse. while i know its not for me, I understand why people would enter into such an arrangement. Just seems to me that more people need to stay outa others business. If they arent hurting anyone who cares. sluts both male and female play a huge role in our society. both are needed. wouldnt alcohol consumption in the bars be cut by 90% without sluts!?!?! what would we do if we didnt have the ills of the world to bitch at?

It goes both ways in my opinion,I learned that from my 7th grade Teacher Ms.Bontog.
Guys are considered cool and ladies man for sexin lots of chicks,but when a girl does it she's considered a slut,when a woman hits a guy,the guy is supposed to be a man and take it,when a guy hits a woman he;s labled a punk or somethin,its bad.
My teacher told us,well to the girls in our class,if you girls really wanna be equal wid men,no cry assault when the beat you up,just take it like the men do.
In my honest opinion everyone should just be nice to everyone regardless of if your a guy or girl,No special treatment just because your a certain sex.
But in my eyes,if you sex around all the time,carelessly, your a slut no matter what sex you are.

LOL... i actually drink maybe two-three times a year. most likely at my Girlfriends request cause i feel bad she doesnt smoke. as far as Im concerned the world can have bars, sluts, and drunkards....i got all that makes my mind happy now that i moved to cali!
